I hope someone can help me! I purchased a clarinet at an auction for $9.00 (because it was in a beautiful leather case and was intriguing). It is in the key of C (pardon my terminology--it's been many years since I've played). On the bell is stamped "Lafayette --Paris." there are no serial numbers or other markings except a "C" stamped on each section. It seems to be in great shape except in need of an overhaul. Can anyone help me with the age of this instument, is it French?... any information would be appreciated.

I can't help you with the pedigree of the instrument, but i'll bet there are any number of people (myself included) who would be more than glad to help you double or triple your money! Any C clarinet is uncommon. To buy one at auction for $9 is good fortune for you.

I agree! As long as the horn has no cracks, you really got a deal. Have you seen the list price for a new C Clarinet? I would lay out the cash for the rebuild. There are so many times in orcheatral literature when it would be a God send to have a C instrument.

Before you spend too much money, you want to know whether
this is a low pitch or a high pitch. I am sure that lots of folks would like to have a C pitch wood clarinet just to collect, but a low pitch would be very desirable.
Is it wood or hard rubber, bakelite, etc?
What is the overall length including the mouthpiece. It does have a mouthpiece?
Is the case a box that you open or the very old style
'holster' case?
Is the albert system (key that wraps around, not very many pinkie keys) or a boehm system (6 ring keys, 17 pads)

The wrap around register key is NOT a good indication of key system. I have seen at least one old Boehm system clarinet that had it.
