 C. Stamitz Eb Concertos
Author: bill28099

I just purchased a Carl Stamitz Eb Concerto, Schirmer's #50262240. I think. The bottom of the pages are marked 46159cx, copyright 1968 by G. Schirmer, Inc. Now I do know this is not Concerto #7 Darmstadt, but when I go to the Naxos site and listen to CD #8.554339 it doesn't appear to be #11 either. Does anyone know what # concerto this is and is there a recording of it?

As you know, Carl Stamitz is thought to have written 11 solo concerti for clarinet, (even though only eight have been authenticated). These were written in the 1770's, for the Bohemian clarinet virtuoso Johann Joseph Beer, whom Stamitz had met while in Paris.

The numbering of the Stamitz concerti is confusing, but most historians now accept the numbering system proposed by Boese.

The specific Eb clarinet concerto you inquired about (as there are a few Eb concerti) is most likely #5...GBK

Here some information from the book "Die Klarinettenkonzerte von Carl Stamitz" by Michael Jacob:

It is certain, that Stamitz has written two Eb concertos. There are different ways of counting (Jacob lists 5). Therefore the sets of these concertos:
a) (Darmstadt) Allegro molto - Adagio - Rondo
b) Allegro - Aria, Andante moderato - Rondo alla Schas, Allegro moderato

Some authors think, that Stamitz has left two further Eb concertos:
c) Allegro ma non troppo- Romance - Rondeau, Tempo di Menuetto
d)Allegro - Siciliano - Rondeau

But due to Jacob (and other authors) it is more probable, that concerto c) is written by German composer Ernst Eichner (1740-1777). Concerto d) is possibly written by the famous clarinettist Johann Joseph Beer.

PS: I didn't realize, that GBK had already answered your question, while I wrote my post. The concerto Nr. 5 (Boese), GBK mentioned, is the Eichner/Stamitz. Beer/Stamitz is in Boese's counting Nr. 11. (Darmstadt Nr. 1 and the last Eb concerto Nr. 9).

Now I'm really confused. What I have is definity an Allegro, Siciliano, Rondeau which would make it item d above, possibly written by Beer. I have seached but can find nothing recorded on CD/phono/tape. Does anyone know of a recording of this work. The Naxos recording of #11 in Eb is not what I've got as it is an Allegro, Aria-Andante moderato, Rondo alla Schas-Allegro moderato.

you don't even know you should ask.

Eduard Brunner (with the Munich Orchestra) has recorded the complete clarinet concerti of Carl Stamitz on 3 cds. The record label was Tudor.

Concerto #5 was on volume 2.

This complete series was recorded in 1992-1994 and is now difficult (but not impossible) to find...GBK

Karl Schlechta has recorded the Beer/Stamitz concerto at the label Arte Nova in 1995. It is (with 3 other Stamitz clarinet concertos) on volume 1 of a series of 4 records named "Mannheimer Schule".
