 The History of Woodwind Instruments

Hi all!
I am starting a term paper on "The History of Woodwind Instruments". Does anyone know of any superb sites I could use to do some preliminary research? Also, are there any really good books I could get to help me out as well? Thanks a lot.

~Nicki

Why do preliminary research on the internet? Why not go straight to the primary source material?

Anthony Baines, "Woodwind Instruments and Their History"

Adam Carse, "Musical Wind Instruments"

Curt Sachs, "The History of Musical Instruments"

Kathleen Schlesinger, "Instruments of the Modern Orchestra"

Of course, it goes without saying that you will check Groves as well...GBK

Yes, Nicki, there are many books, some just giving a brief history, others a very lengthy, detailed account of individual insts. Off hand, I'd suggest you do some library research [I and others will suggest some of which is already recorded], and limit your "scope" to what you need for your " term paper". Baines, "Woodwinds and their History", Sachs "History of Musical Insts", Groves "Dictionary ---" and our clarinet reference books, Brymer, Lawson, Pino, Rendall and others, and very recently, Rice, Clarinets in Baroque and Classical Period 'S, and numerous others will keep you busy !! I believe you may be able to find some condensed histories on the 'net with some looking. IMHO, its a "well-plowed-field" already. Much luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Try "History and evolution of woodwind instruments" By Claire Anette.

:-)

I think Anthony Baines, "Woodwinds and Their History" is excellent - and it's cheap and in print ($10.50 on Amazon, e.g.). You can view the Table of Contents there.

Joel -

Can you supply more information on the Anette book. There's nothing on Amazon, and a Google search turns up only a couple of porn sites.

Best regards.

Ken - at least I'm not the only one who fell for it....

Claire Anette

and her cousins Vi O'Lynn and P. Yanno

get it now.....

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

David -

Thanks. It's a brain-lock day, and it's gonna snow tomorrow.

Do not overlook the wonderful work done by american acoustician Arthur Benade.
