We took in a set tonight (Monday) at Preservation Hall in New Orleans, for which there was a wonderful clarinetist. (We would have like to have stayed longer, but apparently the audience gets "turned over" every x-number of minutes and has to leave, like it or not. I suppose we could have rejoined the long queue outside and paid the admission fee again for another set, if our feet would hold out that long, but we did not get seats the first time and had walked our feet off sightseeing all day besides.)
Anyway, the clarinetist was Michael White. Anybody know anything about him?
Thanks,
Marge

Preservation Hall - my expectations were low when I entered what appeared to be a shabby tourist trap. But it turned out to be as true as anything you can find in that town. Each time a set ended we just jockied for somewhat better seats, until we were sitting knee-to-knee with the front line. No one tried to evict us, and we stayed for about 4 short sets. Maybe it helped that we bought a few requests (and didn't ask for "Saints"!)
My big discovery was Don Vappie, a banjoist who has put together and recorded faithfully accurate Jelly Roll and King Oliver bands. Several of the band were from old N.O. music families. The personnel turn over constantly, but it's always a worthy group.
The only downside: the windows and doors have to be left open for circulation, and there are often 50 Harleys parked across the street, many revving their engines and drowning out the music.

This BB never ceases to amaze me. Last night when I posted my query, I figured somebody very likely would have some info. I checked back in half an hour, thinking that might be a little optimistic, however. But two answers--both right on the money--in less than 15 min.--wow!
By the way, the price for a Saints request is now $10 (used to be $5, I guess).
