 Burt Hara plays Nielson
Author: Jerry McD.
Date:   2004-03-09 03:41

Hi everyone,

Burt Hara is the principle clarinetist of the Minnesota Orchestra and he is playing the Nielson Concerto this week (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday). If you haven't heard him play I would encourage you to listen. The Friday night performance are broadcast locally on Minnesota Public Radio and they used to be broadcast nationally but I'm not sure. The website is http://music.mpr.org/programs/mnorch/ I'm going Friday night and I can't wait.

Jerry McD.

I live in Minnesota and have tickets to this concert on Saturday night. I will send a full report. They will also be playing the Mozart Requiem, so there will also be basset horns.

I heard the performance last night (Thursday) and I was wowed. Burt played nearly flawlessly, and I really really thought he did a bang-up job! I don't recall being quite so impressed with his legato technique the last time he played the work (12 years ago) but I may not have been listening for that then. Last night his legato was spectacular! And the interpretation of the work was the best I've heard. He really should record this work with Osmo Vanska conducting! Osmo really really brought the best possible sound out of the orchestra, and I thought his conception of the work was very very eloquent.

If you live within driving distance, go to the concert. If you don't live in Minnesota, listen to the webcast tonight.

The basset horn playing on the Mozart was ok, FWIW. Didn't hold a candle to the clarinetting on the Nielsen, IMHO...

Well, even if it isn't commercially recorded (although I hope it will be), there are certainly ways to record the performance from the radio or internet.

One of my favorite (shareware) programs for this is WireTap by Ambrosia Software, Inc., which records with hi-quality any sound going through your computer, like a webcast.

I guess with a month subscription to Andante.com, and WireTap, one could have a pretty big recording library! Who needs Napster?
