Almost every home contains a certain inanimate item which emits a concert "F". It is not a musical instrument.
What is the item?

Not sure, but the flourescent lights in our band room emit a Bb, although a little flat. And my dial tone is a concert A.

Eh? It's a dual tone - 350 + 440 Hz.

I must have heard more of the "F" than the "A" ...GBK (who obviously does not have perfect pitch)

New question: Which of us is going to be the first person to break down and walk around the house with a tuner?

(This includes me, who once observed that the computer and the oscillating fan were a major third apart and felt the need to tell people about it)

I had not anticipated that more than one appliance might produce a concert F, for which I apologize.
According to my completely objective and unbiased tuner, the telephone dial tone is a concert F (ten cents sharp). I also played F on my piano while listening to the dial tone and came to the same conclusion: on my phone F is the predominant tone.
Congratulations to everyone who recognized which appliances emit an F.
Hans (also not blessed with perfect pitch)

Believe it or not, the tones can't be more than 3 db different in loudness. The predominant tone is a psychoacoustic effect.

Congrats to all guessers, a couple of them occured to me. I was going to guess, the well-known 60/120 etc cycle hum that practically every transformer/charger/ appliance emits a bit of. I did it again!! "A preposition is a poor thing to end a sentence WITH", my grammer needs help! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Mark, I'm just not going to wait longer for you to "pick me up" on my spelling of grammAr. My beloved Gram Mers have passed on to their reward, wish I could have known them even better, now that I'm a clarinet-playing Grand Pa. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

so i gotta ask ... how many of us read this and waked around the house with a tuner?... I did... the mircrowave was a very flat Bb ... the buzzer when the microwave stopped was an E.... and the cat (stupid thing wouldn't shut up) was a flat A .... the monitor emits a B that is close to in tune as well.... couldn't find an F... so how many of you did this last night as well?

I picked up the phone and the first note I recognised was a concert A but after listening carefully there was indeed a concert F in there too. The microwave is a very sharp concert F and the beep when it's finished is a sharp concert B. The whirring of the oven is an almost perfectly in tune G#. The whirring of the fan in my computer is a slightly flat concert E.

Well, that kept me amused for a while. Now I'm going to go and see how sharp my throat Bb is today...
