Hi,

I'm trying to find Swing That Music by Hucko. If anyone has it on cd or knows where I can pick it up would you please email me privately?
Thanks.

Looked thru some old records, No Peanuts Hucko, even mentioned in "Big Bands". Wasn't he the clar player in the early Glenn Miller orch's. If so, that might give you some leads. Will look in some of my Jazz books. Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I entered peanuts hucko in Google and got a lot of information. He indeed played with Glenn Miller in WWII but is more famous for his work with Louis Armstrong, Bob Crosby and, yes, apparently even with Lawrence Welk! He died in June 2003 at the age of 85.

Saw some CDs on eBay recently. You might try checking that source. You may find yourself sifting through tons of CDs to find him though because we can't post links to active auctions.

I appreciate the input very much.

I've tried every place I know of on the web to check for Swing That Music. No place has it that I know of. The above link lists it but it's not available.

But, I'm going to keep looking. If anyone still has ideas -- I'm open.

Thanks.

I'm troubled to know that there was a grown man out there who preferred to be known as "Peanuts." Even more troubled to know there's currently a fully-grown adult movie director/producer in Hollywood who calls himself "McG." Are their mothers aware of this?

Rev Avery... cdconnection.com (from the link I gave you) shows the CD as available.

Don... Willie Schwartz provided the distinctive lead clarinet sound that the 1939 Miller band was famous for (ex: Moonlight Serenade) ...GBK

Typically, in my experience, neither man nor boy chooses his nickname. Then there were the Nut Brothers, Ches and Wal. Sorry I don't have a clue on P.Hucko....only aware of him.

Peanuts started out as just plain Mike Hucko, a tenor player in the Will Bradley band. Bradley canned him because he couldn't yet play acceptable clarinet! So Hucko must have spent a lot of time in the shed between then and his Air Force days with Miller. Ray McKinley, who played in both bands, obviously was his connection to Miller.

The way I heard it, Irving Fazola was the first to play lead clarinet with Miller, on the 1937 "band that failed." Glenn wrote something complicated Fazola couldn't play on alto (he wasn't the greatest saxophonist ever). So he gave him the lead line on clarinet. There followed a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup moment ("Hey! It's doggone good!")...and the rest is history.

(Ralph G) >> I'm troubled to know that there was a grown man out there who preferred to be known as "Peanuts." <<

It was a different age...no comic strip then, for one thing...also, nicknames were much more prevalent in a generation of Buds, Reds, Sonnys, Dukes etc. Show biz was especially nickname-oriented: every John or James was a Johnny, Jack or Jimmy (not even Jim). The number of Dicks alone boggles description.

The other (once) famous Peanuts was Herbert Holland, a hot trumpeter with such bands as Fletcher Henderson and Charlie Barnet.

Peanuts was famous for his version of 'Stealing Apples' from what I heard. I heard Bob Newman play Peanuts arrangement at one of the Sacremento Jazz Festivals years ago. At the time Bob was playing clarinet with the Fulton Street Jazz Band.

Hi GBK,

When clicking on the link it goes to the CD: Tribute To Louise Armstrong and Benny Goodman, rather than to Swing That Music -- but thanks. I'm still trying.

GBK, I must be doing something wrong.

I did a search by artist for Peanuts Hucko and nothing came up for Hucko.

I did a search by title and put in Swing That Music and Armstrong and some others came up.

I did a search by song for Swing That Music and nothing for Hucko came up.

I did a search for any fields containing Peanuts Hucko and came up with Glen Miller and one other.

What am I doing wrong? I don't come up with Swing That Music by Hucko anywhere :)

Rev...I picked your third search option (by song title and swing that music) and got a list including two entries for Louis Armstrong's CD(s) "Swing That Music"). The first one has Peanuts Hucko listed as one of the participating musicians. Isn't that the CD you are looking for?

And, in fact, Peanuts is the main performer on that CD, but on mostly tenor sax. Swing That Music is cut #1.

Also, a simple google search

"swing that musc" hucko

brought back, on the very top,

http://entertainment.msn.com/album/?album=248488

which is probably what you're actually looking for. You shold be able to go from there ...

Henry, there seems to be a few cds with that title. The one I'm hunting is the one by Hucko -- which seems to be somewhat eluding me.

Mark, yep I had done the Google and also Dogpile searches. I just went to the one you listed which sent me (again) to Amazon which has the option to order it used. In my experience in the past that has meant that one waits for it to come in from someone selling it used.

I've put my name on a couple of waiting lists already and will see how those work out. I have it on order from Tower, but there's a good chance that won't materialize because it's a special order. My special order BGoodman from them wasn't able to come through.

Anyway ... not wanting to drive us crazy over this [rotate] I appreciate the help. That's one of the things I really appreciate about this place.

That is great news msroboto!

Could you please post the direct link for the specific page you found it on saying it's in stock? I would be really grateful.

I'm sorry to ask you to do this, but I keep coming up empty on this. I want to figure out what I'm not doing right. Thanks.
