I just one of these things at the recommendation of my instructor. Does anybody have any experience with it? He gives it raving reviews. I will comment after I play with it a bit. It looks pretty good.
If anybody's interested, it's by Runyon Products of Opelousas Lousiana (1-800-843-4078). $10.40.

Rick2, am I right in thinking it is an artificial gadget for adjusting reeds? Does one get it directly from Runyons?
Thanks for the info.

Santy R. gave me one at Mid-West in Chicago a few years ago. It is kind of a thin little file a bit larger than a pen refill (Paper-Mate), round but flat on one side, and made out of a fine abrasive material about the consistancy of #600 sandpaper. (Looks kind of like a small sparkler) It's a good idea, but it was too hard for an "old dog" like me to get used to this little tool, I still prefer my reed knife and sandpaper.

Essentially how W.F. described it. Karel, My instructor ordered it for me (reminds me, I still owe him 40 cents) but I'm sure if you call the 800 number they'd be more than happy to talk to you aobut it.

Do you use reed rush? In old days it was said to be the best to adjust the reed tips, especially Dutch rush. But in these days reed tips are cut by diamond cutter. Reed rush does nothing but bad. I do not understand why people continue to hold these old things right. Teachers are not always right, I would rather say.

You can ask for Leroy if Santy is not available. They are great people to work with. (I just got 2 mouthpieces from them; one with a jazz chamber and one with a classical chamber, both with removeable baffles).

I still get good results with regular reed rush which I pick for free in the woods. (There are some advantages to living out in the rural areas.)
