 Bass Clarinet in A
Author: B.P.Stevens

Over the years I've played a lot of music for Bass Clarinet in A and have yet to see one or meet anyone who has seen, played, or owned one or knew when last they were produced. Can anybody out there enlighten me on this topic?

I've never seen a bass clarinet in A either, but I've heard that a few of them have been made in this century. My theory is that certain composers (Ravel, damn him!, etc.) wrote the parts for bass clarinet in A to force us to learn to transpose, as preparation for life in the soprano clarinet world (with those irritating A and C clarinet parts). It's just their way of spreading the pain around!

I believe the last time they were made was early in the century. And i rmember hearing one time that only about 7 or 10 (or some other outrageously low number) are known to exist.
