Found this interview with Alan Alda where he talks about using the Mozart Clarinet Quintet in the final episode of MASH. Apparently his wife was/is a clarinetist and he first met her while she was playing it.

i believe this piece was also used in an earlier episode where Winchester tried to teach Korean folk musicians to "play it correctly" after hearing their version on the street.

Is that a different story than the one from the final episode, where Winchester teaches and conducts the Chinese prisoner/musicians, then when they're transported away they're all killed? Then Winchester forever loses his passion for classical music.
I'll bet I could have the same effect on my audience if I ever played K 581.

FYI:
Alan Alda's wife, Arlene, lived very near to me here in Leonia, NJ.
She played clarinet in a semi-professional group here in town called the Leonia Chamber Players, and she was quite good. Alan came to many of the concerts, he loves classical music and the clarinet. We spoke about music and the "big guys" of the clarinet often.
Arlene was a clarinet student at Eastman, and I believe played professionally with a West Coast orchestra. The Mozart Concert, Quintet, and Trio, were all favorites of Alan & Arlene Alda.

Alan and Arlene now live in the Hamptons (Water Mill, NY) and are frequently seen here, around town.
Our big band has played for various charity fund raisers they are involved in. Arlene is also a very accomplished photographer and her pictures are often sold, with the proceeds given to charity. They are examples of celebrities who give something back to their community. Southampton College awarded both of them honorary doctorate degrees in 2003 for their support of major civic, social and political causes.
They are both fans of big band music as well...GBK

Yes, the Chinese POWs-wandering musicians Winchester took under his wing and conducted appeared in the 1983 M*A*S*H* 2-hour final TV Special, "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen". That's pretty cool about Mr. Alda's wife being a clarinetist. I recall reading, or seeing on TV Alan Alda had a home in New Jersey. He would routinely fly coast-to-coast every week; home to New Jersey on the weekends to be with his family and back to California on weekdays to tape the show. And he reportedly did that for the entire 11-years the sitcom was in production. Talk about a grind. v/r Ken
