The March 2004 issue of the Smithsonian mag. contains an interesting blurb on Artie and his donated clarinets..p25. The donated horns are described as a Selmer and a Buffet. The no-name horn pictured in the article contains an interesting barrel.

Yes, I read it. Great article. Hard to believe he hadn't touched either of those clarinets for 50 years! One can only imagine what other great music would have been ours to enjoy.

The article is on line at http://www.smithsonianmag.si.edu/smithsonian/issues04/mar04/object.html . No pictures, though. For those, I guess you have to buy the magazine.

Artie was the guest of honor at the Clarinet Congress several years ago, and there was at the same time a big cover story in The Clarinet. At least at that time, he was over 90 and still feisty.

It's hard for me to believe that the photo in the magazine article is one of Shaw's two named horns.
