Well, I'm finally at that point in my degree where I play my first official recital. I have the repertoire and order mostly planned, but what I'm wondering is if anybody has tips on ways to practice to ensure that I'll have enough stamina to comfortably make it through the whole program. It's only 45 minutes of music, but my program does include the Brahms Eb sonata. Does anyone have particular strategies they'd suggest? Thanks in advance.

Hi there...
Wow -- Have I been there...
My advice is to run through the whole program at least a couple times a week. I have a tendency to get caught up in fixing details, but then my endurance is not built up for the recital. This also helps to lock in where breaths will go; when we just practice parts, we don't always breathe in the same places as when we play the piece in its entirity. Also, playing the whole thing through may help you determine the order of the pieces. Perhaps you will discover that two demanding pieces simply CANNOT go back to back, even if they would sound excellent that way. Or perhaps you will need a few minutes off stage between one piece and another. Basically, just make yourself run the recital, and you will discover for yourself what will work the best!
I hope this helps... Good luck in your preparation and performance!

I am now about two months away from my graduate recital on Clarinet, and I also have my literature planned, and prepared. To work on endurance, I am running the pieces like mentioned, and within the month I will start running the program in full. For now I am working on individual piece endurance. I may practice a piece intensly and then run in entirely, or run a piece throught two or three times with only a short break between runthroughs. I will be doing the full Mozart concerto, and for endurance through the hole thing this is important. If I can run the piece twice in a row, then I should -with nerves- be able to make it once at the recital. I also have planned it second on the recital. That way I am still fresh for the piece, and then intermission after, so that I can rest up for the remainder of the recital.

After you have mastered the technical challenges and can play through your piecies pretty much non-stop with acceptable results, go to what I call "twice-a-day" practice (kind of like the NFL). Play your entire program, with appropriate interavals between numbers, after a morning warm-up. Then, later in the day, or evening, run through the entire program again, without warm-up. That should build your endurance to make it through the recital, once, without fatigue. Good luck!!!!!!
I also recommend memorization. If you can perform your music from memory, then you have truely learned it.
