I am an advanced high school clarinetist with an intrest in majoring in music in college. I am shopping for a mid to high end clarinet that will last me for at lest the next few years. Any suggestions? What brand do you like the most? Thank you for any responses.

Tom,
I too am a high school clarinetist (junior) majoring in clarinet performance once I get to college. A couple years ago, I bought a Buffet R-13 and am very happy with it. Obviously, most people will tell you this is the clarinet for high school- college students. Tons of professionals use them too. I have also played on a Selmer Recital and actually I loved it. It's a lot different than a Buffet and has a much darker sound. It takes a while to get used to, however. I do suggest that when you buy your clarinet, you try more than just one kind of Buffet or Selmer or whatever. Not two wood clarinets are ever the same. When I bought my Buffet I went through 32 clarinets and found a wonderful one. (Woodwind and Brasswind South Bend, IN carries just about everything-www.wwbw.com) Also, many students play on Yamahas (I'm not too crazy about them) and I've heard some good things about Leblancs, though I've never played on one. Good luck!
