 Looking for Music
Author: Mark P. Jasuta

Hi all,
I've been looking for Solo de Concours by Andre Messager, specifically the Andraud edition (sheet music). (I need this edition for next years NYSSMA.) Can someone help? GBK?

During my search I found a music store that specializes in classical music CD recordings. Their prices are great, they seem to have everything, their website is very well set up and easy to use, and respond very fast to emails. They are Arkiv Music LLC

http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/main.jsp

Check them out.

Regards
Mark

Ah 'NYSSMA' - how that evokes memories! (even if it was just for a choral rendition of 'Blowing in the Wind' in 6th Grade). I'm sorry I don't know where you can get the sheet music, but just wanted to say that Jo and I heard two students, probably about your age, play the Solo de Concours in a masterclass at the Single Reed Festival in Colchester, UK. It was very interesting hearing two different renditions and the master clarinetist advise the players. I can't recall all the particulars of what she said, but I do remember that she advised one young man to play with passion in that lovely lyrical bit. Of course, the recommendations are very individual in character. Perhaps Jo can tell you more (she told me she recently ordered this music).

I would like to know what grade is the Solo considered to be by NYSSMA.

Good Luck,
Elizabeth

Elizabeth,
The music is for my daughter. As far as NYSSMA level is concerned it is a level 6 piece located on page 170 of the new NYSSMA manual (July 2003).

Best Regards

So, what's wrong with the Kendor edition?

I have this in a book titled 16 Grands Solos de Concert compiled and revised by Daniel Bonade. It's published by Southern who also published other collections by Andraud. Is this what you are looking for? It isn't copyrighted. Let me know if you want a copy.

Owning the book is even better than a copy; it's not that much and you get Widor, Lefebvre, D'Ollone, Marty, Weber, Stocks, Jeanjean, Francoeur, Pierne, Rimsky-Korsakoff, Gaubert, Coquard, and Hahn to boot.

Southern Music publishes the compilation.

The Andraud edition of Solo de Concours is the same as the Southern Music Company edition. They are interchangeable.

If you look in the back of the current NYSSMA catalog you will see the equivalent edition guide.

As Mark suggested, you can buy the complete anthology of 16 Grand Solos de Concert (Southern Music Company) where it is contained. Or you can purchase the solo individually. It is published by Southern Music Company and the code number is SS-81 ...GBK (a certified NYSSMA judge)

Whoops, sorry Mark, thought it was for yourself. Good luck to your daughter!

GBK,
Thank you for your response. I saw that SMC was listed in the NYSSMA manual, but it didn't sink in that it was an alternate. Thanks for setting me straight. My daughter is busy polishing the Adagio e Tarantella. She has most of it down and just needs to iron out a few rough spots.

Best Regards
Mark

Tell her good luck from me. If you need any additional help/tips/fingerings don't be afraid to contact me off line (or stop in for a lesson if you are going to be in the area) ...GBK
