mpc's "vital" stats (!)

Does anyone know of a site where there might appear a table with the characteristics of various makes of mouthpieces?

I don't know if there's a chart that compares the lays as well as the tip openings, but if you are interested in a certain mouthpiece, that particular mouthpiece's maker will have information as to the length of the table, tip opening, and other things. So whatever you're interested in it might be worth it just to create your own "chart" of the ones you were interested in (and then of course to share that chart in .jpg form with us! [wink]

Where is Greg Smith when you need him?

generally the tip of most North American players is in .41 of an inch zone.. As to facings the baffle is cheifly the part that determines pitch and tonal character.

I heartily agree with your observation that baffle configuration is far more important than tip opening.

typo alert --

your .41 of an inch should (of course) read .041". .041" = 1.05 mm

BTW, are we (USA) EVER going to convert to metric like the rest of the world has done?

Thanks for the correction...been a tough day!

That would certainly eliminate most of the translation to mm ...I tend to feel few players understand the tip opening is not the determining factor in tonal quality.

Recently did a recital with a buddy who uses a Johnston mouthpiece which is very open, but he played with the most beautiful classical sound! It is hard to also tell old school players a tip ove 1.24 mm can play like this!!
