Play lots of them?

Seriously... one of the keys to playing a sustained note is to not treat it like a sustained note. All notes should go somewhere. They may go somewhere by changes in dynamics, intensity, quality, etc. More likely, and more effectively, they may go somewhere only in your mind. If you *think* of a long note as being full and leading toward another note, many of the sustained note problems may solve themselves. This will, over time, manifest itself in a much more subtle, musical manner. However, if you just "sit on the note," it's not likely to get any better. Push the air through.
