In 1912, the ... embarked on a famous three-week tour to the United States of America, the first ... orchestra to visit those distant shores. Legend has it that they narrowly avoided travelling on the ill-fated Titanic, sailing instead a few days earlier on her sister ship, the Baltic. The tour was conducted by Artur Nikisch who, with his band of ninety-nine men and one woman, travelled across the States in a special eight-car Pullman train.
