 Ligature for Crystal Mouthpiece
Author: sherrietanner

Hello, Does it matter which type of Ligature is used for a crystal mouthpiece? I was told not to use metal (Vandoren) but fabric. Is there a sound (huh) reason for this advice? Any thoughts on types of Ligatures in general? Bye

Sherrie

The main reason metal sometimes doesn't work is because it can slide right off a crystal mouthpiece. I have a Harrison Gold that practically shoots off my Pomarico. Instead, I have a couple of inexpensive Joue Jolie ligs that I use among my active mouthpieces. They're metal but fit the Pomarico nicely.

So you may use whatever works -- just be sure it doesn't spring off your mouthpiece and into the flute section at an inopportune moment.t

I often use either an original Harrison gold or a Bonade inverted ligature (with the center removed) on a Vandoren crystal mouthpiece.

If you find that the ligature tends to slip, put a few small strips of paper masking tape on the 4 inside bands of the ligature which grip the mouthpiece.

The Spriggs floating rail (another of my favorite ligatures) is quite secure on a crystal mouthpiece ...GBK
