trilling f to g (in the throat register) is still frustrating me... any ideas how to practice this, to make it less of a problem?

To make the F4 to G4 thumb trill a bit more steady, put your right pinky on any of the RH pinky keys. This gives a bit more support as it helps to hold the clarinet in a secure position.
Of course, there is always the standard F4 to G4 trill fingering: Play F4 and trill by using the throat G# key...GBK

Thanks GBK, I hadn't thought of that: the RH pinky keys! I'll try that.
I knew about the other fingering, but it sounds so-so, if done for an exstended time.

There are three excellent etudes for the left hand in the Langenus Method (part 3, I think, or perhaps part 2). They're fairly short -- less than 2 pages in all -- but give you a workout on everything you need, including the left thumb F-G trill.
Best regards.

Be adventurous, turn the horn upside down and trill it with either index finger!
