 Buffet thumbrest on Leblanc Concerto
Author: LeWhite
Date:   2004-02-09 10:20

I'm pretty sure this can be done, but I'm wondering if Buffet adjustable thumbrests can be ordered just as they are, like as spare parts (Two for each clarinet, Bb & A). I'd just like to know so that is isn't an unreasonable request for my tech. The Buffet thumbrests are so much more comfortable than the Leblanc ones, and I feel that I can get a better, unrestricted hand position with them, not to mention lose that feeling that I'm constantly about to drop my [precious and expensive] instrument.

Many thanks in advance!

Why do want "two for each clarinet"? But, you should be able to order these from your local music store or repair technician. Selmer also offers an adjustable thumb rest on the Signature model, as well.

The Buffet thumbrests can in fact be purchased, although a bit expensive. The E11 comes with same which I have...but did not have much experience with when I ordered one for another horn. I did discover that the holes did not match the existing ones which presented one problem. After attaching it I was not pleased with how it functioned plus I later discovered(thisBB) that it is a casting and susceptible to breakage. In addition the upwards adjustment is not adequate for the thumb position I desired. So....give it some thought.....I'm not happy with mine.

I remember adjustable thumbrests being very expensive. So expensive, in fact, that it would be worth paying a few extra dollars for the Kooiman thumbrest which would probably be much more comfortable. I remmeber a post a while ago saying they were upwards of seventy or eighty dollars. And the kooiman is not much more, and probably more ergonomic.

Will the mixing of Buffet molecules with Leblanc molecules cause an explosion? Perhaps The Doctor can give us some insight.c

Why don't you just go the whole way and buy yourself a proper Buffet clarinet? ;-)

Why not simply reposition the Concerto TRs? Stanly Hasty--Prefessor Emeritus of the Eastman School of Music--advocates (and practices) gluing the TRs to the clarinet rather than redrilling and filling screw holes. "Then, if you don't like where it's at, simply knock it off and reglue it to am more comfortable location."

For me, I have Bay adjustables on my Concertos and Selmer adjustables on my Buffets. So far, no molecular reaction.

Just get the thumbrest you already have mounted at a higher position.

There's no sense in adding yet another layer of fiddling to delay practice.

I happen to like the thumbrest on my Concerto II.....

Is it because you don't have a cushion on it? If not, Phil Shapiro reccomended the obvious to me- cut one of those pencil cushions in three and slide it over the bottom part- it's what I did, and it's really inexpensive to replace (if that's a factor in your decision).

even at $3.00 - $5.00 for the BG thumbrest cushion it is a bargain if it saves your thumb and you can practice.

Buffet Thumbrest's are plastic, although Buffet does offer a silverplated model (which may cause the buyer to take out a 3rd mortgage on their woofer). Of course, it is nice to have the screw holes match up, especially if you are playing presently with a (non-adjustable) Buffet Thumbrest.

Solution: The Jupiter Thumbrest. The screw holes match up EXACTLY with the Buffet holes (amazing isn't it!). The Jupiter Thumbrests are made of stainless steel and have a hole on the end to accomodate neckstrap hooks.

Dealer cost is $5.95 + 30 cents for the 2 screws. SO, check with your friendly dealer who shouldn't charge more than $10.00 for the part.

The Jupiter Thumbrest works quite well. It lacks the utility of the Kooiman for those who need it, but otherwise gets the job done WITH NO EXTRA HOLES.

Caveat: Seek the help of a Repair Professional as one can "auger" (or is a better word booger-up) the holes rendering the (present) screws useless. One has to know when enough Torque is enough. Not to worry, oversize screws can remedy the situation if one uses them properly.

best,
mw

The thought of me playing a Buffet anytime soon again is very funny Liquorice...

I like the Buffet one because it has a larger area for the thumb - it's not about cushioning and it's not about the position (high/low). Of couse the holes wouldn't match up and I'd get it placed higher anyway.

On my previous R13, the thumbrest broke - because it's die cast, it was weak, brittle, and broke.

Regarding Kooniman vs Buffet, I'm really not sure, because how do I know for sure the Kooniman will work for me? I've never tried one nor will I get the opportunity as no-one here has any and no-one stocks them. I know for sure that I like the Buffet thumbrest, it's tried and true, I played on one for 4 years!

Still, it may be worth considering - I've heard nothing but good things about the Kooniman.
