Apologies in advance for my ignorance. I'm really a budding saxophone player but have come across a Buffet Full Boehm System Bb Clarinet serial F 111141. From a search of serial numbers on the net I think it is dated to 1969 but I know nothing more. What quality is this instrument? What price should I expect to pay? What differentiates this "full system" from any other? Any help gratefully received.

Welcome to the BBoard, Ingram, when I saw "Scotland", having some Scot ancestry and enjoying "your" good things, was impelled to reply. Your Full Boehm Buffet is almost certainly their top-of-line clarinet, cost?, IMHO if below $1000 US would be a bargain [condition being considered] . We have discussed the pros/cons of F B's frequently [I own 3 and like them!], so a search [above here] will give you many thots and advice. More?? Don

Hi,
One caution, isn't a F in the serial number the indication of a higher tuned clarinet for Europeon markets that uses a higher than A = 440?

Yeah, the F prefix means that it should tune properly to A=442Hz.
In practice, you'll probably be just fine for pitch.
There are lots of extra keys to stumble over, but you may not have probs.
FYI - The Buffet should be made in the Paris works, rather than Germany.
Consider also the cost of an overhaul if the pads need work.

"Full Boehm" used to be known as "20/7", meaning 3 more keys and one more ring than the standard 17/6 Boehm.
The ring is for LH3, allowing you to play Eb/Bb with fingers 1 and 3 only. The extra keys are RH C#/G# trill for the articulated cup, Ab/Eb lever for left pinky, and of course the extra note, low Eb/Bb for right pinky.
