 Thumb Rest Agony
Author: Melanie

Help! The screw to my adjustable thumb rest fell out today after my lesson, and I can't adjust the height now!

Is there a way I can get a new screw? I have a Buffet R-13 Vintage.

Thanks in advance!

Melanie

Melanie,
Most music stores that have a repairman on staff can help you out right away.

I have the same problem with the thumbrest screw on my Vintage. It is constantly working itself loose and have to get down on hands and knees in my band room a few times to look for it and I fear losing it

Cathy,

Do you really need to adjust your thumbrest a lot? If not, put a little bit of glue on it to lock it in place. There is even special "bolt-lock" glue made for locking bolts, although not specifically for thumbrests!

Here's a tip from my oboe repair person who is a clarinet guy. This works for most adjustment screws and you can get it undone (stronger than nail polish). "Loc-Tite" makes a "low-strength" brand - this isn't the regular stuff - you'll have to look for it. A little dab will do you. I use it on one particular adjustment screw on my English Horn that gets bumped often because it is in the way when I put my horn together. The "Loc-Tite" - "low strength" - keeps it there. If you use the regular strength, you'll have a real problem if you need to readjust or loosen the screw.

Margaret,

Do you put the Loc-Tite stuff on the screw itself? How does that work?

Yep, put it right on the screw and it "sets up". You can try it on something else (not the clarinet) - to see how it works.

No I don't adjust my thumbrest much. I'll try that stuff and see how it works out. Thanks

I have a Festival with an adjustable thumb rest. Once the thumb rest was set for my hands, I let it stay there. I haven't been back to see it since. However, the little chamois-like pad is beginning to slip off. No big deal. I'll peel it off and restick it into place.
