I am looking for a good AND cheap mouthpiece for the bass. I know good and cheap dont really go together.
I dont really own a bass yet but have access to one and want to learn enough on it so I can go to the store and play test all mouthpieces and instruments(accurately).
I just need something so I can learn enough to have a decent tone and can tell from the good and bad instruments in the store.
Anyone think the Yamaha MP are any good? They are the least expensive and Yamaha has come out with some good stuff lately. I have also seen a Vito 2V im not to sure about the Vitos anyway(maybe is because they came in horrible colors).
Any help or suggestionsTHANKS

I think I saw Walter Grabner offer a professional bass mouthpiece crafted from a zinner blank on ebay recently, but not sure if its still there.
Is 50-60 plus dollars still in ur budget range?

Did you notice that I asked the same question, for the same reason, a few hours before you? Look at "Beginning Bass Clarinet, 2 questions". I was not advised to go 'cheap', but some of the makers that were recommended have mouthpieces for not much more than $100. That's not too much for a mouthpiece for a $1000 to $5000 instrument.

I'm currently playing using either the Yamaha 4C that came with my bass. Whilst it isn't the best mouthpiece available I can get a decent tone, good intonation and reasonable projection. I aim to replace it at some point in the next 12 months once I'm comfortable with the instrument and have enough skill built up in playing bass to pick out a mouthpiece that is right for me.

The all time worst Bass clarinet mouthpiece is the C star Selmer, unless of course you get someone to adapt or reface it!!

David Dow is so right about those C stars. I found out the hard ($$) way, though I plan to have it refaced.
My used horn came with a Geo. Bundy 3. This hard-rubber mp was a bit greenish when I got it and I wasn't going to put THAT in my mouth. So I bought the C star.
Later, I learned through this forum that sulfur dioxide in the air caused the hard rubber to develop a greenishness -- it was not mold. I did the bleach-solution soak (search the forum) on the Geo. Bundy 3. It is now nicely black again and quite serviceable. Don, didn't you use GB3 too?

Yes, C H, I inherited a couple Bundy 3's, to me they were quite similar to my C*, all needing a bit of "touch-up", which I do with a few very careful "swipes" on 1500 grit SiC cloth, on a very flat surface, flattening the table, and re-opening [and cleaning] the rails and tip. Most of my do-it-yourselfing is reasonably rewarding, it is fraught with danger, tho. I dont measure, as do the sax mp refacers on www.mouthpiecework@yahoogroups.com . I sure dont mess with my Pomaricos, believe they would be difficult to improve. Any refacing on glass, which I obviously like, I trust to Dave S and Manfredo Cavallini [Italy, address on requests].. Do they make Hite Premier bass clarinet mouthpieces? I like their clarinet mouthpieces for beginners, I would think a bass mouthpiece like that would be great.

I have played on some great Selmer C* mouthpieces. I think like any stock mouthpiece, they can vary greatly. I have had some colleagues who have tried a bunch and found some that are beautiful players.
I don't know of any downright cheap bass mouthpieces, but think it is worth the investment to get something fairly decent. Clark Fobes has a mid level one that I am sure must be great like all of his work.
