Hi all. I am a tenor sax player who is planning on doubling on clarinet soon. I was wondering about the world of clarinet mouthpieces. What is a good opening for a m.piece? What isn't a good opening.. Any help is appreciated. thanks

BBMike: Not sure you're asking the question you want to ask since "it's not all in the mp opening". Do you mean to ask, "What's a good mp for a tenor sax doubler to use?" Fobes Debut would probably be good for starters until you find the one you like.

Jazz players tend to prefer soft reeds and open mouthpieces. Classical players the inverse. What do you use on the sax?

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.
To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

For a tenor sax player, I would suggest a mouthpiece with a fairly long facing (which makes you need a harder reed) and quite open (to negate the need for a hard reed - also helps with getting volume). I love my Vandoren M30 for classical, but it's not open enough for jazz.

I have a Vandoren B45. It works well for jazz. I also double on sax sometimes. At the moment I am looking into the newest crystal Pomarico mouthpieces and will probably order one in March when they arrive in the US. The one I am looking at is even more open than the B45.

David Hite Inc. make super clarinet mouthpieces...I would think you could go with the J facing which is a bit more open...go to the Hite site.

Thanks for all of your input. Just to clarify - I use a 7* Otto Link on my tenor and a 3 reed ("medium"). This is a pretty standard jazz setup. I think what would suit me best for clarinet is a mouthpiece that I could use for jazz and classical. Any suggestions as far as tip opening size?

If you're going to use it for jazz AND classical, you would probably want to look at more of a medium mouthpiece, or maybe even a different mouthpiece for each situation. Many clarinet players have a "classical" MP and a "jazz" one. Others use the same one for both.
