 Sax Serial Numbers

For the saxophiles, here's a list of serial numbers and dates:

http://www.saxcollector.com/serial.html

And for those who wonder about the difference between clarinet and sax, ask yourself what clarinetist could have written this:

Ouch!- that's one angry guy.....but that doesn't automatically make all sax players that way.....some of us like playing sax just as much as clarinet (and flute, as well....) and aren't valuing one over the other......they're all woodwinds, and they're all good.....

You will have to do some real detective work digging, and maybe will not be successful in determining the maker, name and "dating" of your vintage "Stencil"Sax as many Stencil makers have not been identified and there are no complete lists. They either don't exist, or have yet to be discovered and published. There is a great article by Pete Hales on Sax-On-The-Web covering "Stencils" and their dating.

Hi,

I found the Ted Joans stuff rather interesting. I liked it a lot better than rap lyrics.

To each his/her own!

PS The Hawk was the man for a long time. I guess I'm showing my saxophone roots.

Thanks to Bob A for the reference to the article on stencils, which is at http://www.saxontheweb.net/Resources/Stencils.html . It's more about determining the manufacturer than dating, but very useful.

Best regards.

Ken is right, but until you know whose it is, you can't tell what it is. And even then the serials are not the same. The "P" prefix in front of my Conn Serial Number on my Beaumont American, Chicago C-Melody surely does not mean that it was made in the 1971 period--which the regular Conn list would indicate. I'd "gestimate" 1921-24. (And hope someone has better figures)
