Hello fellow clarinet enthusiests,
Does any one have any infor on Henkin Clarinets? I have an Henkin 88S USA model. I bought it used. Its probably at least ten years old, all wood. I was told by my saxophone teacher, who used to teach clarinet to the former owner that Henkin went out of business sometime ago.
Just looking for some background info on the company itself.

I'm not an expert on Henkins by any means, but I bought on as an emergency replacement for my daughter when her original was stolen. It's plastic and after replacing the center cork I was fairly pleased at the tone and how easy it blew. I got curious about it and asked the tech at the music store in Houston and he beieves that these were sold through Sears a few years ago but wasn't really 100% sure himself. However its not a bad little instrument, I,ve even used it during one of our concerts when the cork peeled off my buffet that same day.

Sears huh?
I'm not so sure about that. I don't think my teacher would let any one of her students play on any instrument from some place like Sears or JCPenney, or any stores like that.

I believe I have a small piece of info on Henkin: The former (and perhaps current?) owner of Conn (now part of UMI) was D.J. Henkin, who put his name on some of the instruments made or distributed by his company. For example, I had (about ten years ago) a soprano sax actually manufactured by Julius Keilwerth in Germany, originally distributed in this country by Herb Couf, then by Conn as the "Conn DJH-Modified" (the name engraved on my sax, with "DJH" being D.J. Henkin), and now marketed in the US under Keilwerth's own name. Hope this helps a bit.

If it's the same Keilwerth that Buffet now owns, that would make the Henkin brand at least a decent one. After all, Keilwerth saxes are very good to outstandingly superb, today's marque of professional performance. Of course, this is just speculation on my part, but at least the arguement fits together logically.

I'm afraid you've jumped to the wrong conclusion. Henkin/Conn/UMI merely MARKETED the Keilwerth saxes for a few years, just as Herb Couf had done just prior. Unfortunately, I believe the Henkin clarinets are actually student-grade plastic clarinets made by what was (is?) the Conn company, and thus are probably not very good. I'm sure they're not made by Keilwerth.

I have to agree with the statements about Keilwerth (of course, I'm biased, since I play a Keilwerth, and am VERY sold on them).
As for the Henkin Clarinets, The one that I have is all wood, and apparently has a very good sound.
