Does anyone know about the Kohlert company? My band director is offering to sell me one of his alto clarinets that he no longer needs. It looks to be pretty old, it's a five piece. It's wood and need a new case and a complete overhaul. It's maked "Kohlert." Does anyone know about this brand and if this clarinet would be worth restoring?

I can't speak to Kohlert's alto clar's, but have a K's A clar which is plenty good for my use, well-constructed of good wood. I have had several altos, and its quite possible that one or two might have been made by K, and "stencilled" as Linton, Gerard etc. My major experience is with LeBlanc and presently Selmer, both very good. I would suggest a careful trial to ascertain tuning and any "reach" problems for the little fingers, if your hands are somewhat small. I have found that altos seem to not need Double-Register-Keying as badly as does the bass, but believe the full plateau system is desireable. Will respond further if you desire. Luck, Don

I forgot to mention that Kohlert had made high quality woodwinds for many years in Poland-East Germany-Czechoslovakia [Graslitz-Kraslice etc] dating back into the late 1800's, Mark, please help. Don

The Kohlert name is a very common one - in 1936 there were 8 active Kohlerts in Graslitz/Kraslice. The New Langwill lists 15 Kohlerts (3 Kraslice, 8 Graslitz, 1 Wein, 1 unknown, 1 Berlin, 1 Klingenthal) and 2 Kolerths (both Graslitz - most probably the same family).

I've been talking to a few other people and I've found out that the clarinet would probably be worth restoring. It'll need an overhaul, new case, and a mouthpiece but after that it should be a very good clarinet. The keys are all easy to reach, my hands aren't too small anyway.
