A while back I acquired a Pezel Mueller Bb Clarinet. (It is not playable, as some pads are missing.) The bore is like glass (smooth and shiny), and the wood has no cracks. The bell is stamped "Studio Recording Model". I spoke with someone who told me these are pretty good instruments and that they were made by Buffet for the Long Island company, Penzel and Mueller. Does anyone have any information? I would appreciate any information! Thanks!

The Penzell & Müeller company (New York) was established in 1899 as a pertnership between G. L. Penzell and Edward Müeller from 1920 as 'Penzell & Müeller; 1920-1955 Müeller served as company president, retiring 1925 from production work and builing the firm into the leading American maker of standard woodwind lines; his sons Walter & Gustave were also active in the firm. From c1920 to 1935 the company owned the A. G. Badger Co.; 1946 the firm of Cloos was acquired. Emplyed trade name 'Empire State'.
Gustav Preufer (Preufer woodwinds), VP c1925-1942
Laubin, oboe maker, used P & M facilities.
No association with Buffet as far as I can tell.

Thanks for the info!
The body (upper and lower joints) are stamped "France". Do you know anything about that? (i.e. Which Frech company would have made them?) Also, do you know how the quality would be. Would this make an okay second instrument? I believe the walls are thicker than R13, and the bore is probably different as well... I have no way of estimating the year in which is was manufactured. Serial number is SR2193 (If that helps...)
Thanks again! -P-

As a backup instrument, the PM should do fine. I have a matched set of PM A & B flat clarinets in the 7000 serial number range. Main problem I have with them is that certain keys are smaller than on modern clarinets, C sharp/G sharp and E flat/A flat. I have a wonderful hard rubber mouthpiece marked PM Artist for my tenor sax.

I also have a P M, a full-Boehm [20/7] stamped B LP which I bought from my teacher about 1935 who played it in movie theaters before sound!! Its ser.# is 8840, is cracked , pegged and banded and still plays well , as I remember it goes flat above top-staff G [for me]. I did have an earlier PM FB which had rollers on several little finger keys, gave it to a good teacher-friend in Tulsa. I may pick up an Artist Model shortly. I have a PM mp [New York] and a PM ligature stamped France and Brevete [Fr for patent]. Interesting? Ive never heard of a Buffet connection, but have believed they were associated with the Woodwind Co sometime, but its not far-fetched to believe some of their cls were made in France. Oh yes, I did see a pair of old Alberts labelled Penzel only. Researching history is fun!

In THE CLARINET magazine, vol. 22, No. 3, May-June 1995, the cover article about Kalmen Opperman quotes him as saying
about Penzel-Mueller clarinets that they "competed favorably
with Buffet and Selmer." Opperman had been to P-M company
often and had learned mouthpiece facing skills from a Mr.
Hoffman of that company. If there had been a connection
of P-M with Buffet, I feel he would have known about it and
mentioned it.

I now have the Artist Model P M [17/6]which cost me about 2 songs! No cracks, looks like it will clean up well, has the "intermidiate-style" treatment [narrow] of the rt L F keys and ser no L-690-B , much different from the F B numbering! If anyone has info re: age etc, please let me know. TKS,Don

Hi Folks:
I have to wade in now with my war story.
I picked up a penzel at a junk/antique store in Derry, N.H. summer 99 for 75$.
Had it tuned up for 80 bucks. It is superb. The lower register sounds like port. Smoky, thick and resonent. She's fast too.
Question for the gang. When did they go out of biz? The serial # on this is "Artist" L-552-b
Any idea of the vintage of this one?
I'd love to know.
Cheers
Scott
