which side is the 'front' of the reed?

Apologies is this is a silly question, but I have been reading about breaking in reeds and there is quite a lot of suggestions that the front of the reed should be gently filed as part of the process. However, I don't know which side is the front and which is the back.

The front is the side which does NOT sit flat against the mouthpiece. The front is where the shiny part of the cane is, it's where the reed tapers towards the tip - and filing down this area towards the tip is what most players do to adjust their reeds. Hope that helps!

Yes, I too assume this "front" terminology can be confusing to some unless it is associated with "back". Top/bottom is probably no better.
