 Speed of Articulation
Author: Eric
Date:   2004-01-27 22:51

I have been working on articulation for the past year and have made great progress. I can tongue 16ths comfortably up to about 120 and from 140-160. However I find it difficult to tongue 16ths between 120 and 140. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone know of any methods to solve it besides basic repitition?

Think downbeats. Only actually worry about the first note of each beat, and how you are getting to the first note of the next beat. The rest should fall into place.

I wouldn't even use basic repitition. I think it's a mental block and I would like to suggest a way to 'trick' yourself into doing it. I would start where you could play it comfortably (108? 114? somewhere below you're problem area), and step up the metronome slowly. After a few notches (or presses of a button, whatever model you use) take a look and you'll see that you're in that dreaded 120-140 zone. And at least that'll prove that it's possible[wink]

Wow. I thought I was fast. I can only go about 150, 135 when I'm tired.

Do you double-tongue?

I practice double tonguing consistently but I can single tongue 16ths at 160. I think it is funny that I can play the last movement of Beethoven 4 at 155 but i can't do it at 130. Similarly I can play the Scherzo from a MSDN at 102 but not at 88. I will try the advice given, thanks.
