 WARNING!!VANDORENS GOING UP IN PRICE
Author: bkmorton
Date:   2004-01-24 23:33

I have heard terrible news: Vandorens are going up in price because the Euro is so much higher than an American dollar. I am not sure when the prices will go up but the places that I usually buy reeds from have already raised their prices.

Know of any really cheap reed sites?

Just remember - the world's not only the US. If they chardge in constant Euros, then the countries that use the Euro won't notice any price difference ... and those countries that have a currency that is rising in value against the Euro might see a drop.

It's not terrible news - it's just an ordinary outcome of a global economy.

There are other brands of reeds.

Marca has always been more consistent than Vandoren. The Marca numbering system is different and they still increment in 1/2s. That is a negative.

I'm surprised it has taken this long. My Austrian violin strings went up in price last summer.

bkmorton,

I mentioned Marca as an example of an excellent reed. I'm sure there are other good brands. I wouldn't stop using Vandoren V12 3/12 reeds altogether. I think it is wise to find and use more than one brand of reed. When gig time comes, I start looking for the reeds that I will play. Some times it turns out to be Gonzales FOF, other times Marca or VAN V12.

In 2003 I played mostly Van V12 3 1/2, Marca #3, and FOF 3 1/4, 3 1/2, 3 3/4. FOF 3 3/4 is too hard and I'll work with FOF 3 1/4 and 3 1/2 in 2004.

The Marca reed that will be closest to the Van V12 3 1/2 will be the #3. Since Marca like a lot of manufactures grades in 1/2 and has different gradeing numbers, even this reed may not be for every mouthpiece out there.

I think our Aussie friends will recognise "such is life" as the well known, last words of Australia's most notorious villian-Ned Kelly.

ALRIGHT. TO THOSE WHO DO NOT LIVE IN AMERICA.....SORRY BUT OBVIOUSLY THIS MESSAGE DOESN'T HAVE TO DO WITH YOU.
THIS WAS A KIND ATTEMPT TO MAKE THE AMERICAN CLARINETIST AWARE THAT THE NEXT TIME THAT THEY WALKED INTO A MUSIC STORE TO BUY REEDS, THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO BRING SOME EXTRA CASH.
FOR THOSE WHO DON'T CARE. DON'T READ THE MESSAGES!!!!
SOME PEOPLE ACTUALLY DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THIS.

Yes, and I think we (in the US) should be a good deal more concerned about the price of new French-made Buffet, Leblanc, and Selmer clarinets, as well as Japanese Yamaha's!! That will certainly hit the pocket book! Has anyone noticed any upward trend yet?
Personally, I hope not to be affected, since I recently bought a perfectly fine "old" Leblanc, which (as someone suggested on this BB) also helped the preservation of our beloved "mpingo" tree.

That's why I just bought my Ridenour TR-147 - it's pure rubber ;)

Marca -- what a fabulous idea! Cane from Provence ... France.

Our business exists in a global village. Mpingo from Africa, cane from France or Agentina, mouthpiece blanks from Germany, buyers all over the planet. Exchange rates are just part of the program. You can't hide.

Buffet has indicated a US price increase is likely to be in the 5-7% range, which is a far cry from the 20%+ deterioration of the US Dollar against the Euro. No need to start jumping out of windows just yet.

To offset any currency changes, I suggest buying French reeds when the dollar is strong. You may say that the dollar was strong 3 years ago. Well yes, it was. Perhaps in three years the dollar will be strong again.

This issue only really affects those young clarinetists who buy reeds one box at a time. Most clarinetists I know, both pro and amateur alike have a huge backlog of aged reeds that will keep them playing for many years.

Good luck.

It's coming today. It's in the UPS truck on it's way to my house right now.

Be sure and let up know how it plays.

Next time I am the Dallas or Houston area, I'll try one out. (Just for curiosity)

The dollar is down because the deficit has grown so much. The economy is a very complicated thing and hard to predict. However, almost everyone is forecasting huge deficits for the next decade. That is the baseline. Proposals such as a manned mission to Mars, a single payer health care system, moving social security to private accounts and making the latest tax cut permanent could add trillions more in debt. Much of this debt is held by folks in foreign countries who like to hold U.S. stocks and bonds because these investments are considered to be safe. However, a huge debt makes those investments less safe and money moves to Euros. The cost of imports go up and we get a little more inflation.

You know. I've often thought that the people from this BBoard could unite and form a clarinetist's community. We have doctor's, scientists, teachers, and I think we'd have enough people to live in our own little city. Sort of the "Pythagorean City" of clarinetists instead of mathematicians. Sorry. Just one of the many odd thoughts that pop into my head at various times.
