Hello, I see that there are several suppliers of Mouthpiece Cushions out there in ClarinetLand... So, thick/thin, "Plastic Rubber"? Is there a favorite brand/type among you chaps? Any that should be avoided? Does the mouthpiece material make a difference? Do they all stick on rather well or are some trouble? Only people with teeth need reply...

Still having a ?majority? of adult teeth, I'll attempt a bit of reply. Playing at least occasionally [sp?] on several horns, with usually several mps in their cases, I'm never sure what the mp cushion type will be, before up-capping! But, I like them all, however am finding a trend toward the thin plastics, those of VanDoren marking [V] are quite satisfactory. If I were playing on saxes as earlier, I'd prefer the thicker rubber ones, I believe. On my glass mps, the translucent plastics appear best. Just thots, Don

Hi,
I use cushions on all my clarinet MPs but none on any of my saxophones. I think it is all about angle of the MP in the mouth and the differences in the embouchure. One of my upper, front teeth is slightly longer (not noticeably to the eye) than the other and the patch lets me get a better grip on things.
I have been doing it this way for decades and can't imagine it any other way. I guess there are those that do and those that do not. One teacher I had, a Bonade student, wanted me to change to very thin rubber like surgical gloves (when they were actually made of rubber - try to find those today).

Hey Sherrie, You won't hear any teeth jokes from me! I've been using the Vandorens thin cushion and it works OK. I know that there are thicker ones out there, but my teacher thinks that it will mess up my playing! I have caps on my upper/lower front teeth (football mishap)! I'm well aware of how important the cushion comfort level is! Does anyone have any playing problems with the thick rubber cushions?
