We have many recordings of famous players who play the rep but there are also clarinetists who are fantastic that aren't nearly as well known. I bought a recording of the Brahms quintet with Boris Rener and the Quatuor Ludwig and I think it a very nice recording. Great everything. It's under the naxos label.

Alessandro Carbonare's recording is still my favorite.
He has such an amazing control over his tone and the color of his sound.

Klaus Heymann has time and again proven that his label does not need superstars with super egos and super salary demands to produce quality recordings.
The success of Naxos has hit the major recording labels very hard. Witness how many other labels quickly responded with their own "budget line" recordings.
Heymann's vision of finding the market place niche (quality CD's for between $5-$7) and using relatively unknown talent to produce recordings of known and lesser known repertoire is nothing short of genius.
There are many artists and ensembles who embraced Heymann's policy of a flat-fee-per-disc, with no royalties or artist promotion, and these same performances are often hailed as extremely high quality by music magazines and reviewers world wide. As he has said numerous times, there always were unrecognized artists who could turn in performances on par with many of the big names in classical music. It just was a matter of recording them at reasonable fees and passing the savings to the consumer.
If you haven't discovered Naxos, you are missing a great deal - literally ...GBK

Leister's first recording with Amadeus is certainly one of my favorites...however, I am a big fan of Alessandro Carbonare's recording...as well as Walter Boeykens record as well....as to the
best its a pretty big toss up.
The Leopold Wlach and Carbonare are
right now my favorites.
What makes the Carbonare so special is the incredible control over dynamics...the only criticism is the Quartet strings which are not as strong rythmically as other groups....however, when Carbonare is this good its easy to overshadow even the greatest string players//

I just got Alessandro Carbonare's recording yesterday. It's now my favorite. I have never heard him before. What a genius.
