Author: diz
Date:   2004-01-23 00:37

Hi - the Basset Horn (as opposed to the Basset Clarinet) has a range down to (written) C - yes? (that is, two tones below the standard bottom E of the "normal" clarinet).

thanks

GBK - you're a walking encyclopædia

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Starts at low C, goes comfortably a full four-octave range.

Some pieces that uses basset horns:
Mozart, La Gran Partita
Requiem
I have a version of the 5 Divertimenti, commonly played by two Bb soprano and bassoon, for two Bb and Basset horn.

Do you know others?

Yes, I know a lot more pieces, more than to list here.

If you try www.zerluth.de, go to "KLARINETTE", then "Besetzungen-Übersicht"
you may select most of theese groups an find the note "Bassetthr" in the list.
Most of the literature I own is avaliable there.

Arnold,

What do you reckon to the Hoffmeister piece (has BH with viola bassoon and some others)? I think it's a little gem and will be ordering it soon (hope the stock is still there!).

I heard a FINE B H/ sop cl duet this noon on NPR, about all I recall is that Thea King played. In a spot or two, the BH went down to its low C, I believe, about 2 notes lower than on the usual alto cl, what a tonality!! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

The range of a Basset Horn?
I think I could throw mine about 20 feet, maybe more, depending on how badly I was playing at the time.
Sorry, bad (and old) joke.

John J. Moses ... very droll. I'm working on a "concerto grosso" for Basset Horn and chamber ensemble. Was just clarifying it's range. The piece is in its infancy ... it will be a difficult birth, probably.

I would be VERY surprised if a military/concert band was ever scored including a Basset Horn (alto clarinet, yes).

Indeed, graham,

the quintett for flute (Fl), oboe (Ob), basset horn (BH), viola (Va) and bassoon (Fg) or violoncello (Vc) by Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754-1812) is a gem, allthough I've only tried it once in an amateur group - with violin (Ve) transcription for the Va part.

The other composer we enjoyed is Giovanni Simone Mayr (1763-1845),
his "12 bagatelle a 3" for Fl, Cl and BH or Fg (the BH is the orininal 3rd instrument, but the transcription for Fg was also done by Mayr),
also his "sonate a 6" for 2 Cl, BH, 2 horns (Hr), Fg.

Until now I did not get the chance to play the quartett for BH, Ve, Va and Vc by Georg Druschetzky (1745-1819), also I did not get the people together to play the trio for Cl, BH and Fg by Willy Hess (1906-1997), as well with the 1st and 2nd sextett for Fl, Ob, Cl, BH, Hr and Fg by Carl Eisner (1802-1874).

By the way, from the "marcia lugubre" by Mayr, for 2 Fl, 2 Ob, 2 Cl, 2 Fg, 2 BH, 5 Hr, 3 trumpets, 1 trombone, kettledrum, big drum, Vc + contrabass I only own the score and I donot see any chance to play it in the next future.

Bye and good practising,

Arnold (the basset hornist)

Arnold (guttentag!), hi! It's been a long while since you posted? Thanks for your input, by the way.

Yes, diz,

it's a long while.
But the number of experts for questions concerning "german system" or "basset horn" on this board is growing, so I do not have to answer so much.
Even the "string ligature" does not need much advice, since a description is in the upload section.

Have a nice day,

Arnold (the basset hornist)
