 Evil Reeds!
Author: BCrazY

Hi. I've noticed that since I've switched to bass clarinet, I seem to have a much harder time with new reeds than I did with the little Bb clarinet.

My clarinet teacher gave me a few new reed tips, but they don't seem to be doing much for me.

Would it have anything to do with the fact that I play with file-cut reeds?

Anyone got any suggestions?

Since I have been using a 3.0 Legere reed on my Grabner improved Selmer mouthpiece, I have been virtuosly reed problem free. However, when I want to really "put out the sound", I use VanDoran 3.0 cane which is much less consistant than the "plastic". But when you find a "good" VD, it plays quite well. But that is mostly the "problem"--you must take the time to find that "good" one and then do all the reed prep and care hassell for optimum performance. The Legere is ready to play, "24-7" with no wetting, rubbing, knife balancing or warmup. Instant and consistant sound. I recommend you try one for yourself.

BCrazY,

There is a veritable plethora of information and discussion on reeds (synthetic and cane), m/p's, combinations, etc on Bass Clarinet Group site on Yahoo. You'll see a wide range of preferences there. Personally, I play Gonzalez FOF on sop clar but Legere on bass clar and alto sax, with no obvious drawbacks. Another huge vote for Walter Grabner and his synthetic friendly bass cl m/p's -

I'm sure if you search the archives here, you'll find plenty info also.
