 Swabing bass clarinet necks?
Author: Ben

Is there any reason one needs to swab a bass clarinet neck, as long as you shake out most of the moisture before putting it in the case? Usually just turning it upside down after playing will empty quite a bit of moisture.

to hold it dry, to avoid damage on the metal.

Ben,
If the neck is not swabbed, eventually I would expect debris to accumulate (the same way that deposits collect on mouthpieces) and mold to grow in it.
Regards,
Hans

I agree with Hans and Javier, I swab mine with a smaller, triangular cloth swab regularly after playing. I use a chamois swab for the [wood] UJ and LJ, and handkerchief for my glass mp. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Swabbing the BC neck is absolutely necessary for prevention of odor problems and the eventual buildup of "guck". (Yuck!! to those of you that don't) For my Buffet Prestique "Bay shaped" neck, I use a Buffet handkerchief clarinet swab after every playing, no matter how brief.

And, a friendly reminder for all of you sax doublers out there, don't forget to swab your necks as well--after, of course, swabbing the main body to prevent corrosion and pad damage.
