I really need some help. I have been obsessing about this for days and weeks, which has meant endless searching on the Internet and calling music stores. Now I need to turn this problem over to the wisdom and experience of the Clarinet Board.
Has anyone ever tried to find a clarinet ensemble arrangement for a particular song and could not find anything. What did you do?
My obsession is finding an arrangement for the Star Spangled Banner that would serve well for three or four B-flat clarinets (no bass or alto clarinets). Our trio or quartet, if need be, have an opportunity to play the national anthem at an athletic event in May. In fact, our trio has speculated that if we get good at playing the anthem, we may be able to get into sporting events free by offering our services. Anyways last year, at my daughter’s gymnastics meet, two high school students played a clarinet duet of the national anthem and sounded real good. So I know there has got to be some music out there. One music store suggested that I might have to settle on a choral arrangement. I am unsure how that would work. I found a woodwind quartet arrangement for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon so I transposed the music. When our trio tried this music, the arrangement did not sound good. So I am back to square one.

For a small group of clarinets, I'd think that getting one each, from a concert band arrangement of SSB [ours in Ab is very good], of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd cl, alto cl and bass cl parts and choosing/reorganizing the voicings you like. Don

There is at least 1 SATB (choral) arrangement of it (I've sung it) which you might try. Sorry, I don't have a copy and can't give publisher info. You would not need to transpose with 4 b flat instruments, but the bass and possibly the tenor is written in bass clef, and probably go out of the clarinet range as written.

Hi, Claren -
I believe this subject came up a few weeks ago.
Good suggestions above. You can also copy the Star Spanged Banner from most standard hymnals - available at most local churches and libraries. It's also available on several Web sites - type in "national anthem" or "star spangled banner". Scroll down a few places... it's there. Then just write out the four parts, transposing bass to treble, and toot your hearts out.
For free admission to sporting events you might have to add a few catchy tunes to your repertoire. By all means, go for it

Thanks for your advice. I assume that the clarinet section carries the melody throughout the entire piece. Do you have any publisher information?
