Benny Goodman: Farewell Concert 1981 DVD
Author: katchow

Has anyone seen this?, I just ordered it through amazon the other day and i can't wait to get it...i hope it's not edited...

the thing i hate most about finding footage of my favorite musicians is... it always seems to be in documentary form w/ 15 sec. clips of concert footage followed by friends/critics giving their insight...which i guess is interesting, but i'd rather just hear/see the music!

anyhoo, maybe i'll relay my thoughts on this particular video after i get it

katchow

oh here are the creds:

Goodman's final recorded performance in 1981 from Copenhagen, Denmark features Sven Osmussen, Charly Antolini, Don Haas, Jimmy Maxwell, Harry Pepe and Pete Witte. Included are both a DVD of the performance and a CD.

Final recorded performance? I don't think so.

Goodman performed with his big band on November 5, 1985 (he died seven months later) at an invitation-only concert at New York's Marriot Marquis. It was recorded (the CD was available from many sources, including Musical Heritage Society) as well as video taped and was shown on PBS the following March.

I still have a copy of the video tape. Benny is in rare form and the band (which included Louis Bellson, Bob Haggart, Ken Peplowski and Loren Schoenberg) is very tight.

The CD from that performance was nominated for a Grammy award in 1986 in the category "Best Jazz Instrumental Performance - Big Band"...GBK

hmmm...interesting. Maybe, at the time in 1981, it was intended to be his last recorded performance...but he just couldn't put his horn down :)

-The Rolling Stones come to mind...i wonder how many times they declared a tour to be their last...

it's possible the publisher never updated the title...or maybe it was the last concert they produced and decided to keep the title when going to DVD (August 12, 2003 ) because a "Farewell Concert" would most likely sell more copies...who knows. At any rate, thanks for the info...

BTW, didn't he die in 86? i think its great that he not only played but performed live all the way up to his death. What an amazing life...

This video of BG's "Farewell Concert" is the same as the video entitled: "Benny Goodman: Live at the Trivioli" I have both. It is an excellent performance by all participants. I marveled at how well BG at age 72 or so could still play with great skill and taste.

I have the VHS "Tivoli" and the DVD as well. Very good performance, and I think you'll enjoy it. The camera does a good job of staying with what's important.

I don't know where all this 'farewell' stuff came from. There was no mention of any farewell on the original VHS.

I recently bought the Kultur dvd of the Tivoli performance and can suggest that every clarinet player should see this. It says nothing about a "last" performance.
For anyone who doubts BG's abilities a view of this dvd should be rewarding.
Especially interesting is his solo on "Bring In The Clowns".....certainly not one of his regular pieces as far as I know.

Read my posting above about Goodman's concert on November 5, 1985, just months before he died...GBK

Yes, it's the same concert on a different label but as per above it was not his last one. Mayb e it was the last concert at the Tivoli.!
