 Buffet-Evette Clarinets

If you have a Buffet- Evette intermediate clarinet, please e-mail me. I have one from the 1920's that is really neat, but I haven't found anyone else who has one like mine. My clarinet's serial # is C1875, if you have on with the same "series" of serial #'s than please e-mail me. I think that they are pretty rare due to the fact I can't find another one.

Buffet Evettes are plentiful on the eBay auction site. I don't think the Evette model goes back that far though. Why do you think it was made in 1920s?

Is there something unique about this particular instrument (key system or whatever)?

I have a Buffett-Evette MASTER MODEL that is serial # D306XX.
My repair tech said he had a serial # list that puts mine at circa 1978. If you get someone who really knows what they're doing, these clarinets, the MASTER MODEL's anyway, can sound and play just like the R-13. Mine does, after a complete overhaul: key removal, repad, bore burnish, oil soak, regulation and intonation adjustments.
There are lots of references to Buffet-Evette's in earlier posts here and on the Klarinet List. There are different types. The MASTER MODEL that I have is stamped "Made by Bufett Crampon, Paris France." I'm told other Evette's are/were made in Germany. The ones that aren't MASTER MODELs are said to be inferior, or at least not at or near R-13 quality.
Good Luck.

I also have a an Evette-Buffet master model. It is a good horn and probably one of the the better intermediate models. However, I don't think they are as nice as an R-13, or a pro model Leblanc. I recently upgraded to an R-13, and will be keeping my trusty master model as a backup.

Buffet made two Master Models. Both Excellent horns. Yours, an Evette Master Model, would equate to todays E-11. The other, an Evette & Schaffer Master Model, would equate to an E-13. Both horn began life as an R-13, and for whatever reason, usually minor, very very minor, blems in the wood, they were sold for less under another label. All have the "famous" buffet feel and sweet sound known to all who play and love them.

Please provide proof of this. If Buffet's quality control is so bad that they get enough rejects off their R-13s to large quantities to market not just one but two models, it is hardly to Buffet's credit. This would mean that they are rejecting more than they are accepting. That's not a very cost effective way to do business. The relative quantities produced would lead any reasonable manufacturing company to have separate production lines these intermediate instruments rather than using the rejects from another model.

Until substantive proof can be presented, this is no more than one of the many "urban legends" that abound.

Why do we have to salvage our pride by saying the Master Model is an R-13 reject. I would far rather have an instrument that is the best of and pride of its class rather than one that is a reject form the higher class.
