 Starting new lessons

Hi to everyone out there...I am new to this place and feel that its great! Going to start private lessons in a couple of days...I have been playing the clarinet for 3 years and stopped coz of examinations...

I can't wait to start again but I am actually using an instrument borrowed fm my school(don't know how long they can lend it to me). Also, I am fm Singapore a little country in Asia that has few clarinet dealers and I think new clarinets are just super expensive and good old instruments are hard to come by....

Marius ... good luck to you. Singapore might be a tiny nation but it's an economic giant (for its size). You might try Japan or Korea (as near neighbours) for instruments, or Brisbane (slightly further away). Might just require a trip overseas, perhaps. Having you spoken to the clarinetists in the Singapore Symphony? They might be able some enlightenment.

Well I never relly got a chance to talk to those BIG pple there! Anyway, I am just waiting to see the situation when I start my first lesson...There are actually many models of buffets, Yamahas, LeBlancs, Selmers & such being sold by the dealers here but I just don't know what to buy...(Maybe my budget is just a little small) I played a Buffet E 11 in Secondary school and when I went to college where band funds given by the education ministry were so much bigger, I got to play a RC! So now, the instrument I am using for my lessons is actually an old RC! I never got a chance to play another make so I don't know what suits me best...

Hint: take your teacher with you when you go looking (I'm assuming your teacher is a fairly good clarinetist and not a saxophone player who teachers clarinet, or worse an oboist who teaches clarinet).

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Teachers also can be a big help in knowing when used instruments are coming up on the market. For instance, a teacher might have another student who is upgrading from an R13 to an R13 prestige. And therefore they'll be able to help both parties as a buyer and seller since the latter won't need the R13 anymore, and the former will be able to get a (probably hand-picked) professional clarinet at a used price.

Also, I'm going to go out on a limb and tell you to save and buy a professional model right off the bat. If you can buy one with the help of your teacher you can hold onto that clarinet for a VERY long time. Also, the resale value will be higher than that of a student clarinet.
