 Clarinet Glissando/Smear/Slide
Author: Bigno16

(Please forgive me if there had been a post on this earlier)

I have been forever curious about how one executes glissando on clarinet. I have heard it done and it sounds so amazing and it's one of those things that makes people go "Wow." The most well-known occurance of this is probably in the beginning of the clarinet solo in Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue." In the that Solo Clarinet part, the words "smear" and "gliss~~" appear over the 4th line D to the high C. It's also been referred to as a slide. I have heard you were supposed to drop your embouchure and slide your fingers off the keys and also heard that you were supposed to imagine playing a note much lower than the one you were playing and gradually increase pressure until the note rises. I have not been successful with either of these--perhaps I am just doing it incorrectly. Could anyone somehow describe how to do this glissando? (Particularly GBK, or anyone who has played the Rhapsody in Blue solo?) Thank you.

Glisandos are done by sliding your fingers off of the holes and if pads are involved (rings or teardrops) slowly release them. these are done a lot in klezmer music so posting your question there might bring more help. also have your ambisure loose at the begining of the gliss and tightin it up at the end. It is easer to start out with smaller intervals like fifths. G4 to C5 is a easy one to get down quickly.

GBK says - Why people do not avail themselves of the search feature on this site always astounds me.

There are more than 400 (at last count) replies and threads on glissandi, smears and slides, many pertaining specifically to the Rhapsody in Blue.

I have read practically every one of the multitude of postings on the above topic and there are many very helpful instructional techniques.

Since, as the original poster correctly surmised, this has been discussed many times before, I would strongly suggest reading some of the very generous past advice offered by many of the pros on this board.

Then, if you then have further specific questions, please do not hesitate to ask them...GBK

That is not correct.

In the orchestral part, the word gliss. (only) appears under the C4 (C below the staff), not "over the 4th line D".

The word gliss. also appears twice in the fourth measure after #9, between the notes D5 and D6 as well as between the notes D5 and Bb5 ...GBK

Glissando? Smear? Slide? Why does everyone seem to leave out Portamento?

Michael, as you are rather new to the Bulletin Board, perhaps you are not aware of how to locate older stuff. Click on "Search" (below the Head of any thread) and the rest is almost self-explanatory. If you have any problems using the search feature, just ask.

By the way: a piano can do a glissando -- playing note by note. A trombone can do a portamento -- sounding every intermediate tone across the desired compass. A Clarinet can sort of almost do either, but the player must be very skilled. The Rhapsody in Blue as "originally" done by the Whiteman Band included a great portamento (bad for me, I can't remember the player's name). It's just about impossible for most Clarinetists, but it has become the traditional ideal for the piece. Hey, Gershwin liked it.

Good luck.

Regards,
John

The clarinetist in Whiteman's band on February 12, 1924 was Ross Gorman (who also played in a combo group called the "Virginians" with Ferde Grofé on piano) ...GBK

Sorry guys, I really wasn't aware of how to search for older threads. That's why I apologized at the top. Thank you for telling me, though.

Why does everybody freak about about people asking a question that's been asked? Some of us enjoy giving our input to a question that we didn't have a chance to reply to the first, second or 399th time it was asked. If server space is a problem, I would recommend that the site admin put up a simple note reminding people to do a backsearch.

I run the BBoard, so by default I have something constructive to add:

Considering the time & effort some people have put in to answering many of the common questions, it behooves the user of this BBoard to at least do a casual search to see what's come before. We have now over 135,000 posts online - the chances are that at least a few of them might be relevant.

There are plenty of new qustions to ask, or refinements of old ones, but rehashing the same things again and again, or WHINING that someone told you to go take a look at what's come before, is out of line.

Along those lines, posts which repeatedly ask the same questions pollute the searching ability of those people looking for answers ...

I figure that if someone found this BBoard and figured out how to sign up they'd probably explore the BBoard a bit and check the Rules and Search links out.

Hey, Nick: Try the search feature and you'll see that the old stuff hasn't gone away, unless GBK (he's The Deputy around these parts) has deleted the post from the archives for good reason, or the thread has been closed by GBK or Mark. In case you wonder why GBK is "whining," it's because he's the poor schlepp who has to read every one of those posts eventually (150,000? Yikes!) and decide what to keep and what to can. So he's hardly interested in seeing the same thing go on the pile over and over.

By the way, "everybody" isn't freaking. No need to exaggerate about that. Enough exaggeration goes on when people write about their favorite instruments.

I suggest you search for something to find out how that feature works. Look at an old thread, and unless it's closed, you'll see a reply box at the bottom. It's not a fantasy reply box, it's real. You haven't been silenced. You can comment on any open thread that's on this board right now or in the archives. Knock y'rself out. Just try to make your comment relevant, and before you reactivate an old thread, think of whether it might be better to start a new one. But an older one does get reopened now and then.

Please don't go around yelling some complaint before you know how things work. I was trying to sleep, and you woke me up. :)

Thanks and regards,
John

Hmmm ... perhaps it's now time to ask Mark for a raise? ...GBK (who is currently reading the March 2000 archive postings - only 3 years 10 months to go)

To address the original post: Try doing a one note gliss, then a two note, then etc etc. Perhaps this is an easier way to learn how to do it.

Does anyone know of a good recording of the Darius Milhaud Suite for Violin,Clarinet, and Piano?

Yes, the EMI CD with Gervase De Peyer on clarinet.

Full of wonderful character and style; a real lift and lilt with a most beautiful sound.

Thanks Tom, Do you happen to know where I might obtain this recording? Would I order this at Virgin Records possibly?

Since this thread is probably not on the keeper list, let me just add a word of thanks to GBK for going through those archives, and to Mark for maintaining them. Both have directed me towards some very useful information in the past, and I am grateful.
