 My terrible day!
Author: LeWhite
Date:   2004-01-09 23:30

I just have to tell everyone about my terrible day so far, I need to vent!

I woke up with a painful ulcer in my mouth, who knows how I got that. Then I looked into the bathroom mirror and realised I had a painful pimple on the edge of my lip, and then over breakfast I bit my tongue! And I was going to practise so much today!

I'm sure many people have much worse stories (I'm trying to make myself feel better!).

Sounds like you had better give it a miss today. Mouth ulcers are often a sign that you are a little run down. Missing a day of practise, every now and again, is not necessarily a bad thing.

I am about to finish off my 20th brass repair, my favourites, for the week. I know what a bad day is.

I read somewhere, quite recently, that pineapple juice is very good for soothing/banishing mouth ulcers. It might be worth a try!

When I get one of those suckahs I apply the tip of a Styptic pencil (sold to stop bleeding from shaving cuts) to a canker ulcer (think they are called apthous ulcers) .....hurts like hell for 10 seconds but then it improves it greatly. That is what I do...I think a dentist told me to do it. What u do is yer biz. YMMV....
Caution: Legalese statement follows.....Consult a professional mouth dude before trying, i.e., dont sue me is ya do it.(Better yet, support tort reform)

Joanna

Pineapple juice gives me mouth ulcers - even when quite diluted by other juices.

LeWhite

My father swears by dabbing the ulcer with neat whiskey - again hurts a bit but seems to help.....either that or the whiskey takes your mind off the ulcer! Either way it does sound like a break is in order.

Rinse your mouth with salt water, morning and evening for a couple of days--works every time, for me.

Is your diet high in acid? If I eat lots of tomatoes I can get mouth ulcers ... they're quite painful ... and certainly not good for playing the clarinet, Mark's spot on, too, you might be needing some quality sleeping time.

Where are all the "no-excuses" people? Come on, show us what you're made of (and what the rest of us aren't!)

OK, then, no excuses.

One of my teachers, at the time bass clarinetist with the Denver Symphony, played a concert the same day he had his wisdom teeth out. No big deal, right? Well, he's allergic to certain anesthetics, so he had the procedure without pain killers.

I myself played a rehearsal with a dislocated right thumb.

Does the schadenfreude help, LeWhite?

Oh honey I can top your terrible day....I found out today that I need to have heart surgery. Makes a sore mouth sound kind of trivial, doesn't it?
Those of you who have been on the board for awhile know that a year ago I had knee surgery. This makes surgery number eight. Not to mention the bout of shingles I had in my throat a few years ago. Yikes, talk about not being able to play.

I agree with William about the salt water technique and the person who said to take it easy. Geez, give yourself a break and realize you have a legitimate excuse to not practice for a few days. Seriously, keep the clarinet out of your mouth and stay away from foods that aggravate it. And a few good nights' of sleep will cure lots of "stuff."

Good luck,
Jean

Jean....Indeed, that makes a mouth ulcer sound rather trivial! I'm sure I can speak on behalf of all your friends here when I wish you good luck and strength through the ordeal.

Yes, where are the no-excuses people? It's rather unfair to LeWhite that they gravitate to my posts and completely ignore his.

Because I WAS going to practise like it was no excuse, but was told so adamantly not to! Needless to say I still did, as you're right - an ulcer is a little trivial and IS no excuse. All better now though. Not that it was much of a problem, considering was others have/are going/gone through.

Morrigan,
Since you are in Australia, an Aussie friend of mine once told me that if you put vegemite on the ulcer before bed, when you wake up it is gone. This is due to the high level of Vitamin B in vegemite, which is one of the key reasons (not the only reason by any stretch of the imagination however) that mouth ulcers occur. He gave me some vegemite an I tried it and it works a treat, l although trying to sleep with the taste of vegemite in your mouth is a bit of a pain. I think Marmite works jsut as well, but I have only ever used vegemite, the great aussie classic!
Cheers,
Michael
