Alternate peg lengths for the 1193?

In the case there seems to be a place for different peg lengths; is this right? If so, are they a special order item from Buffet?

I think that Buffet makes only one length of peg for its 1193-2 model bass clarinet. And I only have one "place" in my Buffet case where the end of the peg slips into a hole and the rest of it lays down in a depression (top right in case) And that peg is suficient to provide for even the tallest player, if positioned at it highest point. In any case (no pun intended), if the peg fits, wear it (intended) and don't worry about it--unless you are taller than Wilt, the Stilt. In that event, I would not worry about playing bass clarinet, but rather would think "roundball" and have my agent get me a good NBA contract.

(check with the Buffet folk's if you are still that curious--and not that tall)

Ben, the 1193 comes with a fairly sizeable and fully adjustable peg, so there really wouldn't be a call for a variety (unless someone is going to start a debate about whether cylindrical vs. reverse-conical pegs give you better intonation in the low register...).

Some of us use both.

More seriously, if you really need a longer peg, Ben, you could probably buy a piece of brass rod of the appropriate diameter and have it cut to the desired length. I expect that the peg that comes with the instrument is plated brass. I would look for it at hardware stores, hobby/craft stores, or metalworking supply stores. (Call ahead and save a trip.)

Ben --

Maybe you have the double case that takes both the Bb and A bass clarinets.

I play a lot standing up, so I have made a folding stand about a foot high that I place the peg in ---- I have the height of this stand such so I can play standing or sitting with no ajustment to the peg.

Maybe I'll invent a crane system that suspends the instrument from above. When I'm playing a gig that calls for bass and bari sax, I'll just have the instruments fly in from above like the scenery on stage. See, no more neck and peg problems! Just the matter of paying the teamster to operate the crane...

msloss,
Please sign me up for one of your crane systems after you invent it --- my previous big-band gig had me switching (frequently in mid-chart at fast tempos with only a couple of measures rest) between bari sax, tenor sax, bass clarinet and Bb clarinet --- I narrowly avoided some spectacular mid-air collisions on a number of occasions, but only by taking some extra time and thus missing my entrances........Fortunately (I guess) we're mostly non-union here in the DC area so I don't have to hire the Teamster to operate the crane.
