Hi, does anybody know of any good pieces for six clarinets? Our instrumentation is a bit limited because of the instruments avaliable. one Eb, Bass, Alto... maybe a contra-alto if we can get it to work. This is for a University-level group, and we want something challenging. Any suggestions would be most welcome!

How about "Lucioles" by Eugene Bozza, or "Sextour" by Florent Schmitt? You'll need a BBb Contrabass though, unless you're willing to transcribe the parts for EEb Contralto. Also those and the Bass Clarinet parts are in bass clef. A good CD to listen to with Clarinet Sextet music is "Schmitt/Petit/Werner/Eychenne" by Sextour de Clarinettes Francais REM No. 311226. Check out this wonderful Jazz piece by Dick Hyman:
“Sextet for clarinets” (in three movements) for Eb, 2 Bb, 2 Bb bass (or 1 Eb alto and 1 Bb bass), Eb or Bb contra-bass clarinets.

another good recording to listen to is 'Le Jardin Feerique' available from clarinet classics. I believe they also occasionally use the piccolo A flat.

Wouldn't it be useful to look for clarinet choir music as well? We have several kinds of clarinets in our choir, and depending on who's on the roster for the concert we'll pick out certain pieces - right now our membership is at 10, but we've had 5 or 6 in a concert before. There's an astonishing amount of music out there. So I don't think you need to exclusively look for music for sextet.
Two pieces that we've done successfully and that are challenging are: Gordon Jacob's "Introduction and Rondo", and Rimsky-Korsakov's "Dance of the Buffoons". These were actually performed with a combined clarinet choir with university students, and require the whole range of clarinets. We also have many other pieces in our repertoire with different degrees of difficulty but I don't know if this is really what you're asking about.
