Hi. I've got a very old Selmer A clarinet. It is so old it has the old style logo on it which has an oval with the Selmer company name on it, and above that a circular thing with wings. Below it, there is the H over S, and then the Brevete S.G.D.G..
Someone told me that the "A" inside the oval didn't mean that it was an A clarinet. There is absolutely no question about whether the clarinet is an A or Bb, but I'm curious whether anyone knows whether the "A" inside the oval means it is an "A" clarinet.
Back when this horn was made, lots of manufacturers would emboss a "B" or "A" on the clarinet to distinguish betweeen the keys.

I looked through my seemingly unending pile of vintage Selmers but I don't have any other Selmers of that vintage to compare this to at the moment.

My oldest Selmer, about a 1920, a full Boehm [what is your key system/structure?], has the "dotted" oval with H Selmer [above] with Paris below. Above the oval is what looks like a music lyre, and below it is what looks like a dollar sign [$] with 2 vertical lines. Its well worn and any ser # is gone. Other "collector-players" will have insts from the 1800s, and I'll look in Al Rice's "Clarinet in the Classical Period", however it is prob. too early. If Al should read this thread, he will prob. give you the best info. Mark C and others have the Langwill, which may have logo info. Luck, Don

Some of those old Selmers have an oval enclosing the lettering H & A Selmer Paris, which stands for H(enri) and A(lexandre) Selmer.
