 Openings of Weber works

I don't know if Weber did consciously or not, but he certainly had a tendacy to use the same 'B-flat' as the first note the clarinet plays in several of his works: Concertino, F minor Concerto, and Grand Duo Concertante. I haven't seen the score for his other works, so I don't know what other pieces begin with that B flat. Interesting, isn't it?

Weber just wanted to pick a note (Bb) that had lots of fingering choices, as he knew clarinetists would someday argue over which was correct to use.

As for Mozart:

The first clarinet note of K.622 is a G5.

The first clarinet note of K.581 is a G3.

Amazing... Sounds like a doctoral thesis subject to me...GBK

Did you notice that many end on a trill E and then a high F?

He just had a preference and liked the way it sounded I guess.

GBK - wasn't K622 original in the key of G? but not proveable due to lost MS?

The Winturthur fragment, KV584b/KV621b, was written for basset horn in G. It's the prototype for K622. KV622 was written for A clarinet. A few measures of the Winterthur manuscript show this change, and there's contemporary reports of the Stadler's clarinet. Recently there's been some discoveries of programs (in Riga) of Stadler's performances, which lend credence to the existence of Stadler's extended range clarinet - the basset clarinet in A.

regardless the written note was a G, as in the early sketch the Basset Horn (in G) was written the same, but the accompaniment was in the different key (clumsy writing, but i think you'll get what i mean).
