Lots of folks are looking for others to play with. Might not woodwind.org offer a place / heading / venue for people to 'meet'.

Perhaps sorted by location and then showing what sort of music, skill level, instruments are sought.

It would also be a good spot for community bands & orchestras to let players know of their existence.

It's there (at least it used to be). Just not many people visit it and it falls a little behind. People forget they posted there and don't update it and people don't really check it too often. I myself haven't visited the page in so long I can't remember how to get to it (or even if it's still there).

Darn it. I had just found it. But you beat me to the url post. Oh well.

[EDIT]Well I just submitted an update to my information. Now that this thread has risen, maybe i'll be contacted and it'd be better (IMHO) if my contact information was correct so in the event that someone tries, they'll get through!

BTW, I'm glad that this was posted. Maybe it'll give that section (which is "hidden" under the Research link off the www.woodwind.org main page) a little more popularity.

Before posting my suggestion I did look for such a list - apparently not hard enough.

Having now had a look, let me suggest that the sort be by zip code (or similar mail code and that entries be dated.

Also, provide some way for community bands and orchestras to announce their existence.

Thanks

They're sorted by country & city - that's enough, I think.

There are already a number of sites dedicated just to community bands and orchestras.

As per community bands, here's a fairly comprehensive list (organizes by region)

http://www.boerger.org/c-m/commUSA.html I believe it was updated fairly recently. I found my current community band by pure dumb luck. I had just figured out how to get to get "alt.music.clarinet" to work on AOL and the very first post I saw was "Ramapo Wind Symphony needs clarinet players" (now the Ramsey Wind Symphony). Talk about coincidence.

I also checked out two others on the board, however (and this is what I found out stinks when I checked them out) the list doesn't allude to their skill level as a band. Some of the websites do, but otherwise, it's a hit or miss. The first band I joined (and am still at) is perfect for me. I personally find pieces that are challenging, but all are playable after serious practice for the concert. For some people (like our principle trumpet) it's too easy. So he plays with his horn upsidedown or/and lefty to make pieces more challenging for him (but he's a professional that volunteers his extra time to this band).

The other two I checked out were playing music at such a low level that I would have been bored and would have dreaded going to rehearsals.

Hope that helps your community band search.

Thanks Bennett for bringing this up! I've just added myself to the list :)
Hope some other people in the London area do too!
