 Instruments in correct order
Author: beejay
Date:   2004-01-05 22:41

I volunteered to arrange a piece for our orchestra, but never done it before and am a bit confused about the order I should list instruments on the page. I've done it ... flutes 1 and 2, oboe, clarinets 1 and 2. bass clarinet, trumpet, trombone. Is that correct? I have done the correct transpositions for the piece, and printed out the parts, but should the conductor's version be in concert pitch? Many thanks.

I like to see all of the parts in my scores transposed, just as they are in the written parts. Flutes in D, clarinets in E, etc.

The University of Virginia Library is kind enough to offer a wide selection of staff and score papers for your downloading and printing delight.

http://www.lib.virginia.edu/dmmc/Music/Musicpaper/

Unfortunately, some are listed as "coming soon," but the ones now available, although not just what you need, may help..

And here's a concurrence that the Conductor's score should reflect exactly what the instrumentalists see on their sheets.

John, thank You very much indeed for Your link, it is of much use to me - sometimes I am just mindboggled by the result plain personal engagement can come up to, honestly.

John, thanks, interesting site indeed. I find their generic style spacing a little un-user-friendly ... I prefer much more room between string staves (due to violin range) and much less in the percussion ... but I've certainly bookmarked it and will print some off and use it for sketches. Unfortunately it's only got American size (imperial?) ... I'll just have to rescale before I print into metric paper sizes.

diz, won't most (except the full orchestra sheets) do okay on A4 paper? Have you tried?

Hey, maybe email them with suggestions re what you'd prefer. Having done what's there already, maybe they would consider it.

Regards,
John
lacking any A4 right now

Actually, John ... to be frank ... A4's a pain in the arse for music - it's too narrow and not quite tall enough. I much prefer B4 size for full scores for small to moderate sized ensembles and A3 for mega-orchestras ...

There is still some debate on the proper way instruments should be placed on the page. Interestingly, Wagner placed the horns above the bassoons in a lot of his scores even though convention (by then) placed them below. He obviously blended them with the bassoons and clarinets (to a lesser extent) and considered them aesthetically as part of the woodwind soundscape. In fact if you have bassoons and horns playing harmony it's often a little trick to differentiat which is which (think the beautiful slow movement (Romanza??) from A Midsummernight's Dream)
