 AIM question (relates to board)
Author: Lisa
Date:   2004-01-05 00:39

I have AOL 8.0+.

Whenever I receive email replies to threads (or any email in general), anybody and everybody who replies gets added to my AIM buddy list, and there are these people (you guys) who pop up on my buddy window and I don't recognize you as someone I know. I don't know you, and with all due respect, don't have the time to meet every last one of you when our paths cross online. ;)

Is there a setting I can change in my setup so this stops happening?

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to see you, whoever you are, but don't have an interest in chatting with you or even having "strangers" on my buddy list, ya know?

Any help?

It's you, not us. It has to be something in AOL's settings - this BBoard doesn't do it.

Did you ask the AOL help folk? They're paid to answer those questions :)

Mark,

It looks like Lisa's AOL AIM screen name is in her profile.

Lisa, you might try loging in and editing your profile. Remove the AOL stuff and add an email address if needed.

So's mine. The profile's hidden unless someone clicks on the name.

She's getting names added to her buddy list for every email she gets. Different problem.

I know it's my problem, not yours. This IS intended to be a computer question, not a clarinet bboard question. I know there's nothing I can do HERE to alleviate my issue.

I just thought that maybe one of you was a computer geek and could help me out. I actually didn't think about the live help chat format that AOL has. When I think of it next, I might try that. But this teacher has GOT to think ahead toward tomorrow for right now.

Mark, you're bang on with your reply just above this. Now it's great once in a blue moon to hear from someone who read something on here and wants to discuss it (happened only twice since I've been here). But please, friends, since you all know how to find my screen name now, LOL, don'tcha start harassing me!!! ;)

Honestly, I'm still open to computer geeks who have a quick fix for me. It's not a humungous problem, but a minor annoyance that comes up at least several times a week.

Lisa, I have been seeing some of the same problem since I "graduated" from AOL 6 to AOL 9 with a computer overhaul-speedup, and also dont really care for the "instant messaging" software-whatever. When I see an unknown on my "Buddy" list or an IM pop-up, I delete [X] the entire thing, immediately. These can be reported to AOL as spam, I believe. Luck, Don Is this OK, Mark, if not please delete.

Thanx, Mark, Don

Well technically these are not really spam. The response was solicited here and the fact they got added to the AIM List is a software thing not a spam thing. I would recommend NOT reporting people from the BB as spammers.

>>>Whenever I receive email replies to threads (or any email in general)>>

Her email address doesn't showup in her profile, how are people from the BB getting her email address ?

What began as a serious question on my part has turned into something I now realize can't be answered on here, but it's also a source of amusement, upon reading the recent replies.

I realize thread updates are not spam. When you check "email replies to the address above" at the bottom of the window you type your message in, the replies come to you from the sender's email address. This means I have seen everyone's email address who has replied to this thread. I don't care WHO it comes from, since I can recognize stuff from here by the subject title. Plus I usually delete it after reading it, so no, I don't have a collection of your email addresses on file! ;)

Don, you're right. An easy solution would be to just minimize the IM window and forget about it unless I'm looking for someone specific online. I do use IM sometimes, but others initiate conversations much more frequently than I choose to. It's one reason I'm the only person on the planet without a cell phone--I don't want to be interrupted. Leave me a message at home and I'll get back to you. Yes, I'll answer IMs from people I don't know long enough to figure out who it is, then I decide to chat, or "Sorry, gotta go! Bye!" if I'm in the middle of something else.

Clarence, see my second paragraph above in relation to your question. Also, since aol is my ISP (internet service provider), my buddy list user name IS my aol address.

Next topic. OK, so um, what was your favorite Christmas present? :Þ Just as an aside, I wasn't familiar with the soundtrack to "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and hearing "The Nuttycracker Suite" for the first time made me laugh so much that I had to play that track several times in succession to get the full effect of it!!! Reminds me of that thread on here recently about the SPF bass clarinet solos.
