 Jazz Clarinetists

everyone knows benny, that king of swing, but who are the current really good jazz clarinetists? I have heard acouple but didn't recgognise the name, and they play their clarinet like a saxaphone. It is hard to describe what I am talking about but you cant tell sometimes wether it is a clarry or a sax. anywayse I am looking to get some good recordings with jazz clarinet to if you know of any let me know.

Thanks,

Jimmy

Jimmy, you're rather new around here, so. here's a suggestion: use the Search feature (click on Search, right above your post) and go from there. There was a very recent thread on jazz Clarinetists and jazz Clarinet recordings. You might find just what you're looking for in that thread. If you don't, come back with a more specific question and you'll likely get responses.

Regards,
John

Terry Lightfoot
Monty Sunshine

(the older players may not make your search - but do one anyway)

Hey, Rev:

Did you get "Breakthrough"? Do you want your money back?

What's wrong with 'breakthrough?' Other than it being more or less a crossover album.

Depends on what kind of Jazz you like, dixieland and swing or modern and progressive. I personally like dixieland and swing where you should here improvising around the original chords used in the song being played. You can here and sing the melody right along with the improvising. Listen to the early Pete Fountain recordings! He has Benny's drive with Fazola's rich fat dark sound. Has never sounded like a sax except when he played tenor on a few songs ages ago. Recomended albums would be:

'Pete Fountain Day' - (this album will make you a believer)
'Pete Fountain's New Orleans'
'The Blues - Pete Fountain' (big west coast band behind him)
'Standing Room Only' - (live)
'Swingin Blues' (more recent CD)
'Live at Ryman'

Enjoy and have fun!
Jim

Please don't neglect to look into Don Byron. A fantastic clarinettist who is exploring the jazz idiom and beyond. Two good albums are

For straight ahead swing and impeccable clarinet artistry, I have to recommend Milwaukee's Chuck Hedges. He plays the greatist version of the old standard, "Avalon", that I have ever heard--including Benny's. He has a website you can locate with Google and is definately worth a listen. And--in person--he tells the funniest stories..........for me, he's "Da Man".

SWK: IMO, there's very little wrong with "Breakthrough." I had suggested a while back to Rev. Avery that he should buy a copy, and if he didn't like it, I would personally give him his money back.

Daniels is the Clarinet player whose work I admire most.

John

I noticed Chuck Hedges uses a crystal mouthpiece. I don't see too many that do??

And, I admire E. Daniels the most too. He's just incredible!

Chuck Hedges is great! His most requested peace is 'After You've Gone'. He plays this as good as any clarinet player you can find including Benny Goodman. Chuck sat in with us at Hunter's Club in Rock Island several times during the early Bix Festivals. Played all night!

Rev. Avery, another very good player that uses a glass mouthpiece is Bob Draga from Florida. Bob is playing festivals all the time everywhere.

Anyone know how Jerry Fuller is doing? Heard he had cancer. He lives in the Boston area. Played for many years with Frank and Freddie Assunto, the original Duke's of Dixieland. Joined the Dike's after Jack Maheu.

Rev. Avery, just thought of another one, Allen Vache. I have listened to some of his recordings and was very impressed. He goes from the bottom to the very top with ease and can do it a fast tempos.

I've got a CD entitled "The International All Stars play Benny Goodman...Vol. One."....There is a version of "After you've Gone" on there that's incredible...It features three clarinettists.....I didn't think anyone could follow Ken Peplowski's solo, but Vache does and more than holds his own . Then a European clarinet player, Antti Sarpila, takes his turn and they all go crazy!! These three guys get around the clarinet like few I've ever heard. This CD is one you should have if you like this style of jazz.

I agree that Eddie Daniels is the best. Also check out a very fine jazz clarinetist by the name of Dan St Marseille. Acker Bilk does not have a clean, pure tone.

I jump in everytime this subject is posted as there are always new thoughts on it. My favorite other than Benny is Kenny! (Davern). But now I have new ones to listen to thanks to this post.

I'm still busy trying to learn how to "growl." All I do is get a red face and a horn full of spit.

Is there a source that specializes in Jazz recordings? I'm more interested in the old [Benny Goodman] stuff, but want to explore new sounds.

I forget who mentioned Chuck Hedges, but I just want to say a BIG THANK YOU! This fellow is something else. I got in today "Just Jammin' " and it is some of the coolest stuff I've heard. He has great sound and the music has wonderful feel and swing. I love it. And, I have more of his material coming [hot]

Rev. Avery, ---- If you like Chuck you will LOVE the early PETE FOUNTAIN recordings. Try to find an album entittled 'Pete Fountain Day'. It was recorded live at a New Orleans concert on October 29, 1959 shortly after he left Welk. Along with Pete are, Jack Sperling drums, Don Bagley bass, Merle Koch piano and Godfrey Hirsh vibes. Songs are 'I Got Rhythm, JaDa, China Boy, Avalon, Shine, Tiger Rag, Don't Be That Way, Poor Butterfly, Someday Sweetheart and It's Wonderful. When you first hear the record you will think its Benny Gooman. If you like striaght ahead swing you will be hooked on Pete once you hear this! Pete plays so good on this album that at times you wonder how can someone play those licks! You will have to dig out some old 78s of Benny's trio and quartet work to find anything close to this. The other thing about Fountain, he does all this with a great fat round sound.

Rev. Avery, you will probably have trouble trying to find this album as 33 LPs are a thing of the past. Contact me via email. I think I have some remakes from this album on CDs and be happy to help you out.

Jim

I really appreciate all the suggestions. They've been great. I love the journey to finding new artists that touch you personally. That's, too me, one of the great things about music -- the way it personally impacts you.
Thanks again :)

Many thanks Gents for the high praise; I am genuinely flattered the disc has earned a worthy place in your traditional jazz collections. I am also gratified you received quality customer service from our Publicity Staff ... please enjoy the music for many years to come. As previously stated, the CD was funded 100% with American taxpayer dollars through DoD and Department of Air Force and is available (while in stock) free of charge to ALL.

On topic, and as a fine jazz player I'd heartily recommend Alvin Batiste. To some, his sound can be an acquired taste however, there's no disputing he can convincingly crank out the bop with the best of them. v/r Ken
